Netting Results and ongoing operations Jan 2009

The netting operation turned out to be a maintenance and work party operation, prior to actual netting. Ice delayed us by a week but thanks to our volunteers, including some our senior members who provided much needed refreshments, we achieved a great deal.

The Foundation lake had a major trim and clean up. It now looks more open and, after several major bonfires, an enormous amount of wood has been disposed of.

Mallory Big Lake on the pit bank has been totally rebuilt. Major equipment and a lot of hard work have transformed what was an unsightly and dangerous pit bank. We now have 15 brilliant pegs along this bank. They are not totally finished but when we have some better weather we can complete them. That leaves us 5 pegs on the island bank to renovate; once these have been finished we will have 25 excellent pegs with better access.

The island on Uglies Glebe pool 3 has had a facelift. A surprising amount of trees had invaded this island and the clear up will make for much better fishing later in the year.

All of our fishing lakes are netted on a three-year cycle. Every fishing lake we netted this time was stacked out with small silver fish, mainly skimmers and roach averaging 5 to the pound. Foundation Lake received around 1500 small carp up to about 1¼lbs. Mallory Big Lake received around 1800 small carp up to about 1¼lbs. Glebe Pool 3 received 13 carp averaging 10lbs from the concrete lake Glebe pool 4 received around 100 carp averaging 1lb. Glebe pool 5 received around 100 carp averaging 1½lbs plus 150lbs of bream, from the concrete lake, averaging 2lbs. Glebe pools 6 and 7 received around 100 carp averaging 1lb.

The top lake in the trees is now a rearing pond which you can still fish. It received 700 small carp. The bottom lake in the trees, which is full of some very big carp, also received 700 small carp, as did the concrete lake stock pond.

Pool 8 has some very big fish, we weighed some super ghost carp with the two biggest weighing in at 19lbs and 21lbs 8oz. We have left in dozens of 4-6lbs fish in this lake. 2000 one year carp were moved from our stock ponds for growing on in pool 8.

Several very big perch were netted from every lake and returned, the biggest weighed 4lbs 4oz.

All of this work would not have been possible without the help from the same few volunteers. Remember that everyone benefits. We hope to see more members at our work party. It is a one day event on Sunday 5th April.
