Typical size of newly stocked Buddy carp
On January 3rd and 4th our annual netting operations were in full swing at the Glebe and Mallory. We work on a fishery management plan that involves fish surveys and stock adjustments on roughly a three year cycle for every lake.
Thanks to everyone involved including the Soup Kitchen Boys and Girls who made this extremely cold work more bearable.
On the Thursday it was so cold that we had three people suffering from hypothermia, including an unauthorised swim from one member.
This is roughly the outcome over the two days:
Pool 1 - Several thousand very small silver fish, mainly bream, were removed. These were replaced by thousands of magnificent small carp from Pool 8. Many of these fish were between 1 and 1 1/2 pounds. 20 carp weighing a total of almost 200lb were also removed and transferred into Glebe Pool 3. These stocks were replenished with around 300lb of smaller carp out of pool 3.
Pools 6 and 7 received several hundred small pool 8 carp.
Pool 3 - This was netted and several thousand small roach were removed. Apart from receiving the 20 large carp from pool 1 we netted 15 carp from Mallory Concrete Lake, magnificent young fish averaging 10lb each.
The top lake in the trees at Mallory was netted. This contained around a thousand small carp. Half of these carp were transferred to Mallory Large Lake to supplement the existing carp stocks. The remaining 500 carp should now grow more quickly and provide better sport in this lake.
Glebe Pool 8 contains some big carp. The two biggest weighed 20lb and 18lb with a further 10 fish around 12-14lb. Plenty of the larger stock-fish still remain in this, our best rearing pond. In addition several thousand year-one carp were transferred from our stock ponds into pool 8, destined to be next year's stocking fish.
The stock pool adjoining pools 6 and 7 now contains around 2000 year-one carp. In addition, around 700 small carp were transferred to the Concrete Lake for growing-on.
Conclusion
This was one of our most successful netting operations. Our lakes contain masses of quality fish. This is only possible because of our fishery policy. Please note that the only reason we have such good fish is down to this policy. Without a good plan all of our lakes would rapidly be full of stunted fish that would affect the overall quality of our fish.
