display archiveThe better weather had brought out some of the summer anglers for this the last of our series. Even with a few of our regulars down in Cornwall on the Whiteacres festival there were 43 anglers at the draw. As I noted last week it was very tight at the top and everyone knew what they had to do for a top five place. This week I had drawn peg 22 on the end section of pool one, a good area but the previous week had seen fish shoaled at the far end. The match fished very well with everyone catching in my line of view. Although I couldn't see Tony Woodings at peg 24 he was relaying me his catch report and he was doing much better than myself. Tony was alternating between the pole and straight lead but was catching more on the lead tight over. I stuck to plugging away on the pole for most of the match with a steady run of around 12 carp at 13m on corn over hemp. With half an hour of the match remaining Tony reported to have 18 carp averaging around 4lb that would make around 70lb. I decided to have a look on my margin line, I had been feeding micro pellets there all match, three big carp and two good skimmers boosted my weight.
We weighed in from 30 and although no one had admitted catching, as usual, we soon had a couple of 60lb plus weights on the board. Tony was well in front with 81lb and I had it all to do for a much needed result. My last gasp margin fish gave me that extra needed for second place, importantly just beating Albert Bray who was also in the top league places by only a pound.
Pool 1
Section 3
Peg 24 - Tony Woodings - 81lb
Peg 22 - Kev Russell - 69lb
Peg 28 - Albert Bray - 68lb
In the middle section there had been some big catches and good results were needed by Gordon Parker and Chris Allen. I was able to see Carl Redman bagging for most of the match just a few pegs from me and it was going to be an important section. Carl weighed first and put an impressive 114lb of carp and skimmers onto the scales, most had fallen to paste bait on the long pole Gordon, in top spot going into the match, weighed next and put a good catch of 70lb onto the scales this was good enough for third. It was Chris Allen who really bagged with 147lb of carp on the long pole and banded pellet from peg 15. This gave Chris the easy win in the section.
Section 2
Peg 15 - Chris Allen - 147lb
Peg 19 - Carl Redman - 114lb
Peg 16 - Gordon Parker - 70lb
As we started to weigh the last sections the calculations had been made, Dom Lanni on peg 2 needed a win to once again win the title. With the first angler in the section putting back over 40lb of fish, before the weigh-in, it was a surprise to find third place at the next peg, Shane Fowler with 35lb! Keith Hudson then put 38lb onto the scales. Would this be enough. As Dom pulled out his net it became clear that he had done it with a really hard fished for catch, 58lb of small buddy carp gave Dom the section win and the all important Winter League Champion Title.
Section 1
Peg 2 - Dom Lanni - 58lb
Peg 5 - Keith Hudson - 38lb
Peg 8 - Shane Fowler - 35lb
Pool 4 was a close match with Mick Wilkinson tops, fishing a really clever match rotating between different areas of his peg to optimise his catch rate. Roy fished a similar match to take second with a good run towards the end with the fish coming on to the bait. Stand up Bingo Champion and end peg drawing supreme, Dave Hunter, finished in third place.
Pool 4
Peg 68 - Mick Wilkinson - 92lb
Peg 73 - Roy Marlow - 84lb
Peg 75 - Dave Hunter - 72lb
Pool 5 saw our top rambling member David Dagga Ward once again in the dream peg 76. It was alleged that there were so many fish in Dagga’s peg that he didn't need to ramble around to the far side as usual, he could of walked across the fish’s backs. At the other end of the lake it was proof that all the fish weren't in Dagga’s peg as Rich Wells had 77lb for second and Chris Needham had 71lb, good for second and enough winnings for the Chinese! Mr Ward later added that comments about his peg were only made because he battered the angler to his right. He suggested that if any reader wanted to know who this was they should ask at MATCH CATCH in Syston. Nasty.
Peg 76 - David Ward - 81lb 15ozs
Peg 82 - Rich Wells - 77lb
Peg 84 - Chris Needham - 71lb
Down on pool 6 it was always going to be little girl’s peg 86, with Dave Hough making no mistakes taking the win. Kerry Dyson showed that the were also fish at the far end taking second with 60lb, Gary Miller taking third from peg 88. Rob Bowser was unfortunate to draw my blanking peg 92, a forth place costing him a place in the final Winter League result.
Pool 6
Peg 86 - Dave Hough - 77lb
Peg 96 - Kerry Dyson - 60lb
Peg 88 - Gary Miller - 56lb
Pool seven was a close match with Stu Johnson taking the win, Rob Hollis in second and Mick Burrows in third.
Pool 7
Peg - 103 - Stu Johnson - 66lb
Peg - 105 - Rob Hollis - 54lb
Peg - 101 - Mick Burrows - 53lb.

Domonic Lanni
And finally, a very hard winter took its toll on our league, but it was hard fished throughout and once again proved to be a good battle right up to the last match. A good few anglers had taken a turn at the top throughout the matches. We had a points tie for fifth place with the top weight taking the place. A very well done to Domonic for the win and a big thank you to all the competitors for making the job of running the events easier for the team in a difficult winter.
