Sunday 28th February 2010

This Sunday's attendance was down a little, perhaps due to the extreme weather forecast of 40mph winds and monsoon rain, with only 28 anglers were at the draw. The bad weather never arrived and although we had a gusty wind it kept dry at reasonably comfortable at 6 C.

Pool 1 was pegged out with two sections of seven anglers whilst pool 6 had six anglers and pool 7 again having seven. The regular practising anglers had reported mixed results with some catching well and others practising watching a motionless quiver tip. The only practice needed at the moment seems to be skill in the draw bag! Mr Ward once again drew a flier, peg 2 up on pool 1. He was quickly reminded that it had won almost every match for ages in the first section. No pressure then. What's more Mr Ward had to contend with, in his words 'the third and fourth most moaning anglers in the match', being Andy Kind on peg 1 and Chris ACE Downs on peg 4. It is a bit sketchy as to what happened on pool 1, with regular report contributor Robber absent from the match. There were reports that Chris Downs had so many fish in his peg that he didn't have time to moan at all, this still hasn't been verified by a sensible person. Chris did however manage to beat every one in the section by over 57lb. Mr Ward apparently was trying to get closer to Chris's catching area by casting into peg 3. Now most of the match group have moaned peg 3 out of the draw because it apparently has an imaginary snag where they loose all of their fish. Perhaps that is why Mr Ward also lost hundreds of fish in the same area to this snag. Apparently he didn't want it too easy casting straight out in front of him where it was clear and so many matches had been won!

Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 4 - Chris Downs - 87lb
Peg 11 - Albert Bray - 30lb
Pegs 2 & 3 - David Ward - 20lb

The second half of the lake was a struggle for carp and most of the weights were made up of silver fish taken on the pole. Apprentice fishery manager Rich Bedder was in fine form, with two empty pegs either side, taking almost 40lb to the net. Dave 'Ringo' Ringham had also given up on the carp and picked up the pole to catch 20lb of quality skimmers for second.

Section 2
Peg 28 - Rich Bedder - 39lb
Peg 21 - Ringo - 20lb
Peg 25 - Kerry Dyson - 18lb

With Bob Eaton not at the draw I decided to let young Jarrad draw me one of his fliers, it was not to be though as he pulled me out peg 94, once more in a very dodgy area. Jarrad had also drawn himself a couple of pegs away on peg 90 and Gordon Parker had drawn my blanking peg 92.
All we could hope was that the rain on Thursday & Friday had moved the fish down the lake away from the infeed at the little girl's peg 86. Rich Wells was the lucky angler this week to face the pressure of that peg. Straight away Gordon was into a string of fish, taking around seven in the first half hour. Jarrad had soon twigged where the shoal of fish were and had taken a few by casting up to Gordon into the empty peg 91. I suffered in the first half of the match with only one buddy carp to show for my effort. Micky Moore had also tempted a few big buddies on the feeder below me on the end peg. I decided to switch to a small ground bait feeder and maggot and almost straight away caught a string of buddies to the end of the match. Two were even big enough to go into the carp net. Gordon was the run-away winner with around 40 newly stocked fish for 53lb. Jarrad came in second with 38lb and I was pleasantly surprised to get third with my catch of 14 fish. Richard was most disappointed as the cold water had indeed put the fish off in 86 and he was rewarded with only one carp. Micky Moore was also a bit miffed as he had only seen me catch four fish! The others were all under the radar.

Pool 6
Peg 92 - Gordon Parker - 53lb
Peg 90 - 91 - Jarrad Smith - 38lb
Peg 94 - Kev Russell - 22lb

Pool 7 was once again dominated by Chris Allen and Needham, the former opting to fish popped up bread on the straight lead to take the section from peg 108. Chris Needham however was experiencing the urge once again to fish a waggler and was rewarded with some good fish. Although some of the anglers on this pool were questioning Chris's masculinity, for fishing such a girlie method, several were noticed at the end of the match having a go with Chris's kit. I think a few more may be delving into feminine side in the last few matches of the season, watch this space.

Pool 7
Peg 108 - Chris Allen - 57lb
Peg 106 - Chris Needham - 34lb
Peg 105 - Dave Hunter - 33lb

Mr Ward has asked me not to mention that one top angler fishing Pool 7 suffered a complete blank, not even troubling the scales. He had though asked that it be pointed out that the identity of this angler can be obtained from the MATCH CATCH Tackle shop in Syston. Nasty.
