Sunday 14th March 2010

A big improvement in the weather had swelled the attendance for the penultimate match in our winter league series. 33 anglers were spread across four lakes with three sections on pool 1, a section on pool 4 and a section on each of pools 6 and 7. Things were very tight at the top of the league with only a point between the anglers. It was unfortunate that five of the top six anglers ended up drawn on the pool 4 section, there were only 6 pegs in this section. This would mean that there would be guaranteed losses and gains in this section, it also happened that I was drawn in it!

Pool 1 didn't throw up the weights that were expected with the slightly milder weather. Section 1 was won by Gary Ellett on peg 2. The back-up weights were very close behind in a tough section. Mr Ward was providing the amusement in this section with so many trips to the far bank of peg 4 to retrieve his tackle. In section 2 Tony Woodings was top at peg 19 with Chris Allen second on the next peg. Bob Conway was back to form taking the third place in the section from peg 11. A sure sign that things are changing and spring is hopefully just around the corner was the amount of carp present at the far end of pool 1. Carl Redman soon twigged that the fish had moved to this end of the lake and optimised his draw on peg 29 to cast into peg 30 to take the top weight on the lake with 79lb.

Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 2 - Gary Ellett - 36lb
Peg 5 - Eric Burton - 33lb
Peg 1 - Mick Wilkinson - 32lb
Section 2
Peg 19 - Tony Woodings - 44lb
Peg 18 - Chris Allen - 37lb
Peg 11 - Bob Conway - 23lb
Section 3
Peg 29 - Carl Redman - 79lb
Peg 21 - Andy Towers - 34lb
Peg 25 - Rich Wells - 31lb

Pool 4 hasn't been match fished since December and was restocked with small fish a few weeks ago. The small fish didn't show in any numbers, but the larger fish were still in a feeding mood. Dom Lanni took the early lead taking a string of good sized carp on the straight lead with bread punch at peg 74. Gordon Parker was also catching well at the other end, also on the bread. I was pegged next to Domonic at peg 73 and was lucky that he occasionally had a go on the pole as this seemed to allow the odd fish into my peg. Domonic continued to catch throughout the match on both the pole and the lead, even taking four fish in the last hour in the margin up to peg 75. His final tally of 14 fish totalled 101lb for a good and important win for league points. Gordon suffered a bit of bad luck on two occasions, casting into the trees on the far bank, his monkey impressions up the tree were very amusing for the rest of us watching but it seemed to kill his swim towards the end. Steve Conway optimised with four big fish in the final hour in the long margin of peg 66 to take second from Gordon. I managed eight fish for fourth but this was not enough to keep me in the chase for the winter league crown. The battle is now between Gordon Parker, Dominic Lanni and Rob Bowser.

Pool 4
Peg 74 - Dom Lanni - 101lb
Peg 67 - Steve Conway - 67lb
Peg 68 - Gordon Parker - 63lb

Little girl’s peg 86 once again dominated pool 6 with Jarred drawing out the flier. Unfortunately this week he drew it for his pal Jamie Adcock who was running late at the draw, always a good tactic for a good peg that one, ask Chris Needham! Jamie was relieved not to fail from this pressure peg, putting 81lb onto the scales. Angling legend Bob Eaton had a great second place from unfancied peg 96 at the other end of the lake, pushing Chris Downs into third spot.

Pool 6
Peg 86 - Jamie Adcock - 81lb
Peg 96 - Bob Eaton - 78lb
Peg 88 - Chris Downs - 76lb

Pool 7 fished harder with Gary Miller taking top spot with 53lb. It was very close after that with Dave Hunter and Chris Hall only ounces apart.

Pool 7
Peg 107 - Gary Miller - 53lb
Peg 101 - Dave Hunter - 47lb 12oz
Peg 108 - Chris Hall - 47lb 4oz

This is how the top of the league now stands with the final match in the series next Sunday:

Gordon Parker 91 points
Domonic Lanni 89 points
Rob Bowser 88 points
Kev Russell 87 points
Steve Conway 86 points
Chris Allen 85 points
Albert Bray 85 points
