exit from archiveIt was an early start for me this week, I had arranged to meet Scott Brown up at the Mallory Park Cafe for the Formula One breakfast, which would keep me going for the day. Scott thought it may last him until elevenses! He has to keep his strength up. Mr Ward was already abusing the members as we got to the draw. We ended up with 44 anglers after Pro Angler Mr Psorter ducked out at the last minute. It was suggested that there may be a connection with the fact that Young Jarrad had also decided to have a lay in. We are awaiting some sound evidence on these allegations. Perhaps more may come out of the closet after they have spent a week together in the same chalet at Whiteacres! At the draw there were reports from the match the day previous on pool 1, apparently Rob Eel Pizza Clayton had drawn the flier, peg one. We never did get to learn his final weight but there was talk that the peg may have been poisoned with vinegar, vodka or other secret bait formulas. The match had apparently fished hard with a winning weigh of around 39lbs.
The weights were much improved for our match and it was Stu O'Donnell on peg four that won the first section catching mainly on the feeder cast across to the far bank. Stu put nearly 90lbs on the scales. Gordon Priddey was at the next peg for second, but caught on the long pole in very difficult conditions, the wind having made it difficult for a lot of the anglers on the pole. Richard Morgan also caught on the feeder at peg seven for third place. Peg one did not produce for whatever reason!
Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 4 - Stu O'Donnell - 89lbs
Peg 5 - Gordon Priddey - 76lbs
Peg 7 - Rich Morgan - 75lbs
Section two was once again a tough section with several of the league's top placed anglers drawn together. Again it was league lead Gary Miller that came out on top with a carp catch of 48lbs. OAP, and former Likely Lad, Brian Envis was runner up from unfancied peg 11. Brian caught late on the straight lead cast just past his long pole line. Another OAP, angling legend Bob Eaton was in third place with a good catch of silver fish caught close in on the pole.
Section 2
Peg 15 - Gary Miller - 48lbs
Peg 11 - Brian Envis - 35lbs
Peg 21 - Bob Eaton - 33lbs
Section 3 was proof that the fish are moving around a bit, perhaps with the rising temperatures, longer days and perhaps the affects of the strong wind. Tony Woodings took a big catch of 81lbs from peg 30 which has not produced any fish for months. Keith Hudson was second and Chris Needham would be keeping his local Chinese in business with his third place winnings.
Section 3
Peg 30 - Tony Woodings - 81lbs
Peg 24 - Keith Hudson - 68lbs
Peg 22 - Chris Needham (team ABU) - 44lbs
The fish were moving on pool 4 with either end producing first and second for pool 4 regulars Ian Saiger and Albert Bray. Third placed angler ACE Chris Downs was drawn on the hot peg in the middle of the pool.
Pool 4
Peg 73 - Ian Saiger - 98lbs
Peg 67 - Albert Bray - 81lbs
Peg 71 - Chris Downs (team ABU) - 64lbs
Jim Chessman has really found some good form, taking his second ton in two weeks. Jim held off last week's pool 5 winner, John Palmer, who also broke the hundred pound barrier. Chris Hall came in third.
Pool 5
Peg 80 - Jim Chessman - 112lbs
Peg 83 - John Palmer - 103lbs
Peg 79 - Chris Hall - 58lbs
Mr Ward must have started saying prayers. He usually has the last but one peg in the draw bag, but with his pal Robber away he had the last one, once again he was gifted with the little girl's peg 86. Mr Ward tried all his usual tricks, apparently visiting the far bank 6 or 7 times during the course of the match. Even so, he didn't get the win, the wind had blown the fish past all the other anglers, according to Paul Bolsover, on his favourite peg 88, and up to the far end. Richard Wells took the winning weight fishing the margin with a long pole on peg 96, to beat Mr. Ward by just one carp. Eric Burton managed to catch the odd fish on peg 90, as they swam between Mr Ward and Richard, for third place.
Pool 6
Peg 96 - Rich Wells - 71lbs
Peg 86 - David Ward - 68lbs
Peg 90 - Eric Burton - 58lbs
I had drawn on pool seven this week, peg 105, a good area but it was going to be hard to beat the in-form peg 108 I thought. My thoughts soon proved to be reality with Carl Redman, on 108, catching fish on the short pole very early on in the match. I had started on the feeder with bread and had four fish in the first hour. But I was soon worried and scared on to the pole as Kerry Dyson, on peg 107, also started to catch carp on the short pole. I tried on the pole but four foul hooked and lost carp left me frustrated, so it was back to the feeder. This proved to be a good move with Kerry and me going fish for fish throughout the match. Kerry also had problems with the foul hookers, loosing some big fish towards the end of the match. It was going to be close for second. At the finish Carl was way out in front catching a brilliant net of 152lbs at 5m on meat baits. I was in luck with my 15 fish just beating Kerry’s catch. A very close finish. At the other end of the pool it was also a very close affair with regular winners Dom Lanni and Steve Conway having their own battle. Dom came out just in front by only one ounce.
Pool 7
Peg 108 - Carl Redman - 152lbs
Peg 105 - Kevin Russell (team ABU) - 78lbs
Peg 107 - Kerry Dyson - 71lbs
And finally, we only have one match left in the league - the top of the table is very tight and next week's match will prove to be a great decider. With the fish switching on all over the fishery anything can happen! Watch this space for the final results.
