Mallory Park Fisheries - Snide Rumours & Dirty Lies

The end of British Summer Time coincided with the start of the 2009/10 Glebe winter league, no one admitted to getting there early, but as usual there were a couple of anglers late for the draw. The pegs were shuffled and 52 anglers were off to their pegs. It was a mild day for October and there a strong south westerly wind, perfect conditions for a good day's fishing. The sections were made up of 7 or 8 anglers depending on the lake, each section having 4 prizes.

Paul Gardener was the top weight on pool 1, taking carp on banded pellet and pinging pellets over the top at 20 metres. This gave Paul the win in the first section. Chris Allen had a good performance on peg 8 with an angler each side, taking 57lb for second. Leicester's Professional angler, Steve Porter, was back at the venue and had more bites that he has had for months to finish in third spot with the end peg throwing up a few fish for Pete Exton in fourth spot. Pete had drawn this peg many times I am told so he should have felt at home.

Section 2 was won by Dave West with a good weight from peg 17, but it was in the runner up places that the battle was fought hard. Only a couple of pounds split up Mark Davis, Roy Marlow, and Gary Miller who finished in that order. Our resident fishery coach, Gordon Parker, was top in the last section taking 77lb on the feeder from peg 21, it was noted that he is still a force to be reckoned with even when he is fishing on his own and not as a duet. Rich Morgan took a good weight for second at the unfancied end of the pool and Carl Williams and Bill Pryce were in the other places from adjacent pegs.

Pool 4 was a pegging nightmare with anglers whinging at the start that they were drawn in the middle pegs on the lake, and others pulling faces because they were toward the end of the lake, the committee has taken note, and the trophy needs a new home, and a good polish. Moaning and whinging aside the lake fished well with the day's top weight falling to Ian Saiger with 105lb, it must be added that Ian was happy with his draw at peg 68, three in from the end peg. Second place went to Gary Sadler on one of the middle pegs, he was also happy with his draw. third place was ACE Chris Downs from a peg he didn't fancy, one in from the end. fourth spot was taken from a middle peg by Steve Conway, it was noted though that he was nursed through the episode all day by his father, well done Bob.

Pool 5 saw Dom Lanni draw a rare end peg and easily win the pool with an exact ton up weight. Young star Jarred Smith had obviously had some more good coaching from his mentor Honest Jim to finish in second spot. Kerry Dyson at the next peg took third and the other end peg produced enough carp for Paul Bolsover to claim fourth place.

New member Steve Keightley was under pressure on his first match drawing the all time pressure peg, little girl's 86. He didn't fail though taking a solid 89lb on the long pole up the margin on corn to give him the win. Keith Hudson came in second, although Mr Ward, who was also on this lake, said that it was because he had a empty peg each side. A close look at the results sheet proved this to be wrong as Rob Clayton was to his right! Albert Bray took third spot and there was a tie for fourth with Mr Ward and Steve Neimas both taking 23lb 4oz from the difficult end of the lake. It must be added that Mr Ward did have an empty peg either side, this is very unusual as he has been on an end peg for the last few months! More on that later.

Over our F1 breakfast at the Mallory cafe I had told Roy I wouldn't mind drawing a peg down on pool 7. At the draw Bob Eaton did the business and drew me out peg 107. I had a word with Carl Williams, he runs the Saturday league on the two bottom pools, he told me that the pool had fished well with the end peg taking first and second. It turned out to be a great match with very close weights. I had 12 carp on the bread with a feeder using a groundbait formula that had helped me on several occasions in last year's league. I lost three big carp early on due to angler error, they could have proved decisive as I knew it was going to be close between myself, Rob Bowser and Rich Bedder, both fishing similar tactics, especially with Rob taking two carp in the dying minutes of the match. It turned out that I had just done enough to win with Rob in second, Rob Hollis came in third from end peg 98 and Rich Bedder also suffered a couple of big fish lost on the other end peg 109, he claimed the fourth place.

It has been noticed recently that the regular drawing of end pegs, often seen as an advantage, by some of our anglers on matches is a cause for concern. The committee therefore feels that I should keep track of end pegs for our records during the coming months, the following anglers are lucky enough to start the ball rolling. Interestingly only three of the listed anglers were lucky enough to win their sections from end pegs this week, three were actually last in the section with one not even troubling the scales, effectively making the other end peg on the lake last place. We will see how this develops, but I won't list any more names until someone draws more than one end peg, be it good or bad! This week's lucky anglers were:
