Sunday 8th November 2009

Team Abacus got the sums right this week and 44 anglers were allotted their pegs for the match. There was a bit of grumbling on pool 1 though, one angler not only wanted the advantage of an end peg, and up to now it does seem to be an advantage, he also wanted an empty peg as well. The committee has been looking at whether this constitutes a vote for the November whingers award, but apparently the angler in question is excused the award because he whinges every week about something. We had two minutes silence for remembrance before starting to fish at 11.02am, which reminds me that the aforementioned angler wanted to start earlier!

There was a cool easterly wind blowing across pool 1 where I had drawn peg 21. I started on the usual feeder across to the boards and hooked and lost a fish on the first cast, not good, I had no more bites on this line in the following 30 minutes. Anglers were catching in my section to my left but to my right it was very quiet. A change to a very small feeder and hair-rigged corn started to bring a steady run of fish and a change to straight lead in the last couple of hours improved my catch rate. I finished up with around 17 carp and had a good weight. It was not clear how many had fish had been caught in my section.

We started the weigh-in with Paul Bolsover on end peg 30, this was unfortunately one of only two end pegs that didn't frame this week, perhaps it was because it didn't have an empty peg at the other side! In fairness the section didn't fish well, with the top end of the section predictable the better end. Steve Conway fished a brilliant match from this end catching some big carp on pellet over pellet at 14 ½ mtrs to amass a catch of 93lb. 23lb was enough for second at the next peg for Rich wells on similar tactics. Gary miller was in third catching on a feeder cast two-thirds across.

In the middle section I had done enough for the win and was pleasantly surprised to have doubled my estimated catch weight with 82lb. Honest Jim Chessman was second with an almost correctly guessed weight of 63lb, hence the name. Andy Kind had really concentrated this week and had edged his way into third place.

The first section was again hard going with the last three pegs scoring the points. Rich Morgan took top weight on the lake from peg 2, taking a magnificent 104lb on hair rigged pellet - pellet feeder. John Duncan had 55lb at the next peg also on the feeder. We had a few reports of rod rage at peg 1, normally well behaved angler Brian Hill had packed away his pole, with half an hour to fish, only to get his feeder tackle tangled on the far bank foliage, Rich Morgan at the next peg was quite shocked at the language used.

Pool 1

Section 1
Peg 2 - Rich Morgan - 104lb
Peg 4 - John Duncan - 55lb
Peg 1 - Brian Hill - 45lb

Section 2
Peg 21 - Kev Russell - 82lb
Peg 17 - Jim Chessman - 63lb
Peg 15 - Andy Kind - 55lb

Section 3
Peg 23 - Steve Conway - 93lb
Peg 24 - Rich Wells - 23lb
Peg 27 - Gary Miller - 19lb

On Pool 4 the fish had apparently been blown to the opposite end of the lake to the previous week. Chris Allen, once again on an end, peg did the business with 106lb taken on the pole - pellet. Bob Eaton, at the next peg caught on bread feeder for second. Mark Davis proved not all the fish had ‘gone with the wind’ to take third from the other end.

Pool 4
Peg 75 - Chris Allen - 106lb
Peg 73 - Bob Eaton - 65lb
Peg 68 - Mark Davis - 61lb

Pool 5 saw Tony Woodings win at peg 76, Tony doesn't come very often but he apparently reserves this peg for when he does! His catch amounted to 111lb and he was heard to be calling some of the fish by names! Dave Colkin, also on an end peg for the second week running was second at peg 85. Chris Downs made a good comeback in the middle of the lake to take third place.

Pool 5
Peg 76 - Tony Woodings - 111lb
Peg 85 - Dave Colkin - 74lb
Peg 80 - Chris Downs - 64lb

There seems to be a pattern forming regarding end pegs, Domonic Lanni was on peg 86, the little girl's peg. Reports are sketchy as to the goings on down there but the news was that Domonic did quite bit of roving about. Firstly, saving Mick Moore from a crocodile, that had pulled his pole in, it could have been an anaconda! He also coached Rob Clayton of Team Abacus into a memorable second place before settling down to put the highest weight on the day of 120lb into his net.

Pool 6
Peg 86 - Dom Lanni - 120lb
Peg 88 - Rob Clayton - 51lb
Peg 90 - mick moore - 41lb

Andy Towers has been on two of the three league matches, he has had to sit on two end pegs, this week winning pool 7 from peg 98. Apparently he is giving drawing lessons at the shop. Gordon Parker was back to form at the next peg taking second. It was a tie for third between Tony Berresford and OAP Brian Envis on adjacent pegs, both weighing 35lb. Mr Ward was heard to say at the payout that if Brian hadn't been out nightclubbing into the early hours he may have won!

Pool 7
Peg 98 - Andy Towers - 87lb
Peg 100 - Gordon Parker - 69lb
Peg 102 - Tony Beresford - 35lb
Peg 104 - Brian Envis - 35lb

With end pegs clearly being a great advantage at the moment there are several anglers that are gifted at the draw bag, drawing two from three matches. The committee will keep an eye on this and make it know when someone does the triple.
