Winter league report by Kev Russell:

This was the first match of our 2006/7 winter league campaign and the usual end peg hunters were first at the draw-bag, looking for the easy pegs. One of the first out was end peg 97 on Pool 6, drawn by Andy ‘end peg’ Kind, all of the other ‘easy’ end pegs soon came out apart from the one everyone wanted, peg 86. It was still in with only two anglers left to draw, Dagga & Roy. Dagga pulled out peg 19 leaving the ‘little girls’ peg for his buddy. Unfortunately for me I had drawn the next peg, 88, and I also had the ‘master of Mallory’, Gordon Parker, in my section on 94. It was going to be interesting.

Roy was soon catching on the feeder, putting four carp in the net early then switching to the pole and catching well in the margin. I was struggling - one fish on the feeder and nothing close in, then the heavens opened and we had a spell of torrential rain followed by a thunder storm. Roy complained he couldn't see his float, I replied that I wasn't surprised as it was under most of the time. Gordon was also catching well. As the rain slowed and it brightened up I managed to catch a few out at 11m but they wouldn't settle and a spell of foul hooking left me with the conclusion that they had come up in the water. I put a shallow rig on and caught well, putting nine good carp in the net. When that dried up I went back on the bottom and had a dozen good skimmers and a few more carp. As I called time I had a carp on and ended with 17 in the net. Roy had around 30 and Gordon was admitting to 25 - it had been a good match.

At the weigh-in Roy had 140lb, Gordon 102lb and I had 98lb. It was much closer than I thought and the end peg hadn't been easy for Andy, weighing-in 50lb.

Pool 7 had been very quiet and no one knew who had won. It was a very close match with Trev Slater taking top spot with 74lb from peg 104, Steve Niemas was second from end peg 98, and Chris Marks had 71lb from peg 102 for third.

Pool 1 was split into three sections. The first section was won by Bob ‘over practice’ Eaton with 115lb, Paul Jarram second with 95lb and Brian ‘the bread’ Envis in third with 88lb. The middle section was won easily by Gordon Priddey, in top form after a week at White Acres, taking 137lb. Less than half his weight was needed for second with Scott Brown taking 66lb - he blamed this on the fact that Rob Clayton on the next peg had psyched him out. After a nightmare match where nothing had gone right Dave ‘Dagga’ Ward came in third with 48lb - he had fed so much corn his arm was aching, but did he catch on it, no!

The last section was a very close affair with Andy Towers taking top spot with 119lb and only 6oz behind was Dom Lanni, with Gary Miller coming in third with 95lb. Apart from the weather, a very good match with good battles through the field. A total of 2191lb of fish were weighed-in by 28 anglers, giving an average weight of 78lb. Only two anglers went home frightened to weigh.
