Mallory Park Fisheries - Snide Rumours & Dirty Lies

One of our draw organisers and Team Abacus front man Rob Clayton was missing this week, apparently he had been grounded doing some decorating before Santa arrives. A volunteer was soon found to add up the attendees and give me a definitive number of pegs to arrange so that everyone would be happy, although experience tells me that is impossible when dealing with anglers. I arranged 41 pegs, as instructed by my volunteer, his name sounds something like Chris Downs, only to find at the end of the draw, once again, we were a peg short. So not only did Chris end up with peg 30, it had been left out to save anyone tears, he also now has become a fully earned Team Abacus member. My apologies must go to poor Mick Moore who I had assured had two empty pegs at number 29 during the draw. Please blame Team Abacus.

The day started much cooler than it had been during the week and there was a stiff SW wind that was to turn to a cold westerly during the match. I had this week drawn peg 15 and was able to see fully the first section, pegs 1 -8. There was plenty of banter in this section and all were catching a few but no one was admitting it. At the weigh in it was Mark Davis, on peg 4, who took the section. Mark had caught some big fish late on the pole and meat. Second from peg 2 was Gordon Priddey who also caught mainly on the pole early on before the wind had changed. Third was 'honest' Jim Chessman on his favourite peg 7.

I had a good start opting for a simple feeder down the middle tactic whilst others had gone across, this was soon twigged by Gord Parker and he overtook me later in the match to win the section with 14 carp against my 9. 'Honest' Jim was impressed with my guessed weight this week as it was even closer than his. Gordon was however almost 30% out with his estimate. Gary Sadler had a good run at the end on some clever tactics which I will not divulge as I may need to use them in the future.

Peg 15 - Kev Russell - 48lb
Peg 14 - Gary Sadler - 31lb

Also on his favourite ‘diving board’ peg was angling legend Bob Eaton, Bob made no mistakes and blitzed the section with 68lb feeding corn down the middle of the lake. Second was Rob Hollis and third Eric Burton, a Team Abacus member was very unlucky at peg 30 to miss out by only 2 ounces. Mick Moore was not available for comment at peg 29!

Gary Miller was back after a week off, taking a good win on pool 4. Gary caught some big carp with a bread feeder and hookbait. Also having a fine performance was Team Abacus’s Mr Ward. Mr Ward, on the end peg once again, was quick to point out that if he had not been hounded all day by ‘robber’ Roy for his flask, he may have even won the lake. Tony Berresford was third from the other end of the lake.

Peg 73 - Gary Miller - 55lb
Peg 75 - David Ward - 42lb
Peg 68 - Tony Berresford - 29lb

Carl Williams, also a wizard at the draw bag, easily took top spot from the end peg on pool five. Andy Kind was awarded man of the match for an impressive catch of silver fish at peg 83 for second, beating Albert Bray's four carp into third place by just ounces.

Rob Bowser had survived the previous week's battering by Mr Ward, and had secretly scrounged some of the new bait from Roy, he was heard to say 'it must be brilliant if Dagga can beat me with it!' . Rob used the new bait to good effect, winning the section from peg 88. New member Richard Harvey didn't have any pressure at peg 86, not knowing the lake he was unaware that it was the ‘the little girl's peg’ at the draw. I'm sure someone soon let him know when he got to the peg though. Andy Towers was unusually in the middle of the lake at peg 92 but still used some good water craft to take third from a poor area.

Dom Lanni is invincible at the moment, taking the highest weight of the day once again and making it five wins from five matches, Dom blitzed the section with 97lb. Second on the lake was Paul Bolsover from the other end of the lake with Chris Hall in third place.

After five matches we now have Rich Bedder and Chris Allen both drawing three end pegs. We have been informed that Richard was always on a good peg during his River Soar team fishing days. I have also noticed that although these two have drawn the most end pegs from five matches there are some anglers that have not fished all but have drawn an end peg on each match they have attended! There are also some that have not strictly been on the end peg but have drawn the end of the section, when the end hasn't been put in, the committee is taking notes. One last thing, I have been asked to mention, the fact that ‘honest ‘ Jim took two visits to the far bank of pool one this week. Apparently 'doing a Dagga', please we need evidence. The committee will only accept photographs of offenders with one leg over the water!
