exit from archiveLast week's winter league had once again been cancelled due to ice on all of the lakes. The few that fished a knock up had mixed results with the early pegs on pool 1 throwing up carp for the winner Chris Needham. Pool 2 was completely iced over but eight intrepid anglers broke through and also had mixed results with the road bank throwing up the winning weigh of 35lb for Steve Conway.
With Team Abacus back in charge the match was soon organised without any problems. There was hope that with the restocking on pools 6 and 7 that a good few fish would be caught. The draw everyone was hoping for was an early number on pool 1. I found myself this week drawn on peg 11, not a good draw this week as it fell into the first section. On the hot peg was Rob Bowser who made it look easy with a winning weight of 65lb, all carp taken on the lead across to the far bank. End peg specialist Dave hunter was runner up showing how to bring peg 1 back to form. If you have read the report over the last few months you will know it has destroyed several of our top anglers. Team Abacus’s Dagga Ward had a tremendous performance on peg 4, he kept his cool throughout the match under severe pressure from Steve ‘Billy’ Conway at the next peg. Mr Ward fished so hard that he didn't even have to pay a visit to the far bank to retrieve tackle. His determination was paid off with a late run of carp which gave him the third spot, doubling Billy’s weight. I had 12lb of skimmers, a gamble to sit it out for a carp in the last two hours did not work, perhaps I need some tips from Mr Ward!
Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 2 - Rob Bowser - 65lb
Peg 1 - Dave Hunter - 55lb
Peg 4 - Dave Ward - 22lb
Next to me Richard Bedder, who is now the apprentice fishery manager, had a good day's sport with a solitary carp on the feeder and a good catch of big skimmers on the pole. This was enough to take the honours it the middle section. ‘Robber’ Roy was in second place with three skilfully landed carp, the biggest of which was caught on someone else's rig that Roy had managed to hook through the swivel! Andy Kind in third place was sure that this was unfair.
Section 2
Peg 12 - Rich Bedder - 24lb
Peg 18 - Roy Marlow - 18lb
Peg 17 - Andy Kind - 11lb
Rob Hollis was tops in the very close section at the far end of the lake. He did lose one carp he estimated to be around ten pounds. This was the carp that Roy had caught on his rig! Dom was feeling relieved to only just stave off another defeat by Team Abacus’s other ace Rob Clayton.
Section 3
Peg 26 - Rob Hollis - 24lb
Peg 23 - Dom Lanni - 23lb
Peg 28 - Rob Clayton - 21lb
The peg where we had restocked with around 1000 new fish was drawn by none other than Jarred Smith. Stu O'Donnell commented that he could see Jarrad’s tip pulling round at the next peg with all the liners he was getting. The first few pegs shared all of the bites in this lake with the rest very hard indeed. The new fish that averaged around 8oz failed to show in any numbers.
Pool 6
Peg 86 - Jarred Smith - 76lb
Peg 89 - Tony Woodings - 23lb
Peg 87 - Stu O'Donnell - 19lb
The weights in pool 7 were very close, mainly bigger fish being caught, the thousands of fish stocked the previous day were in no mood to feed. Albert Bray continued his run of results with the top weight on this lake
Pool 7
Peg 104 - Albert Bray - 48lb
Peg 102 - Andy Towers - 33lb
Peg 107 - Rich Morgan - 30lb
The temperature is dropping again outside as I write this report so it will be fingers crossed that we can finish this group of five matches with another good match on Sunday.
