exit from archiveWINTER LEAGUE UPDATE

We have had four matches cancelled due to thick ice after a very good start to the league. We have one match left in this group of five matches, if this match goes ahead on the 9th January it will be the only match to count for the groups points so could be very important and shake up the league a little. Here are a few reports of other things going on at the fishery.
NETTING UPDATES
Bringing the netting dates forward a month seemed a good idea last summer, this was to avoid what happened last January when the lakes all froze and delayed our annual netting. Needless to say it didn't turn out as planned. However a one-day window opened on Friday December 17th when Glebe pools 6 & 7 were virtually ice free, the first time in weeks.
The netting team helped by apprentice fishery manager Rich Bedder were soon up to their necks in water that was so cold it froze everything within minuets of being out of it. We removed several thousand small bream and roach from both pools, so many it just did not seem possible to have so many in the lakes and them not be caught when fishing maggot baits. Also a total of 12 big carp up to 17lbs were transferred into Glebe pool 3 Uglies.
Glebe pool 8 was netted and was solid with buddy carps, beautiful scale perfect fish. Around 400 were distributed into pools 6 & 7, the average weight was around 10 oz. Hopefully these will spread and make for more even fishing, especially on pool 6 which as been very peggy.
The remaining fish in Glebe 6 & 7 were in great condition; apart from hundreds of carp of all sizes there were plenty of big skimmers and bream up to 3lbs. Also a lot of good perch to just over 2lbs.
All of the big pet carp are still in Glebe pool 8 there are six that are in the low 20s.
This is just the first part of the netting and we expect to have plenty of more buddies to distribute. The interesting point is that you can have a lake full of unwanted fish and not know they are there, Glebe pool 2 and 3 will be interesting when netted as I suspect both will be solid with small unwanted fish that will have to be removed. Failure to do this will result in stunted small fish and lack of food and oxygen for the larger fish.
Keep an eye on the weather as we will net again at the next opportunity, just ring me if you want to help.
ICE ROAD TRUCKERS
The usual work party people have been very busy during the cold spell. Tree felling and pruning are all very important parts of fishery management, special thanks to everyone who has helped which has not been many.
A few more hands would be very welcome on days when the fishing is not possible due to the ice.
TWO VERY FUNNY STORIES
As everyone knows we do not print anything if we do not know it is true and all reports have to be verified. To protect the innocent where possible we use alias names because the last thing we want to do is embarrass anyone.
Story 1
Roys phone rings.
In a whispered voice the person on the other end says "Roy I am on Glebe Pool 6 and there are 3 cormorant on pool 7."
Roy, Have they seen you?
No I crept back behind the bushes.
Roy, Where are they?
Two on the ice and one on a pole on the far side.
Roy, Are they moving?
No but they look cold.
Roy, They could be comatosed because of the cold, can you get a stone or a log and creep up behind the one on the pole and clobber it?
I will have a go, I will call you back.
Two minutes go by...
Roys phone rings "You bas**rd Marlow, they are decoys".
I said I would not mention the member by name and as I said to avoid any embarrassment I won't.
However I can tell you that within a few seconds of the phone going down Mr D. Ward had a phone call from Scott Brown, I think the term used is damage limitation, it is a bit late for that.
Story 2
Roys phone rings on a Tuesday after the entire Glebe has been solid with ice for three weeks.
How are you?
Roy, OK how are you?
Not very well.
Roy, why what is the matter with you?
I fell down the stairs and cracked a couple of ribs?
Roy That's terrible, did you slip on something?
No I was drunk.
Roy, Well you won't get any sympathy from me.
Anyway I have rung to see if lakes 6 & 7 are clear for our match on Saturday
Roy, You will not believe this, when I got up this morning it was minus 7 degrees in Whetstone and foggy. You know how the Glebe is high up, well the sun was shining and it was plus 8 degrees. What’s more we have had a huge bonfire on the car park and the North wind has blown the heat down the lake and melted all of the ice.
"That’s amazing."
Roy, I know and what’s more all of the swans from the Leicester canal are here along with a load of geese and ducks they are all swimming up and down and keeping the lake ice free.
"That's fantastic."
Roy What’s more some fish are rolling, as well they must think it is summer.
"Wow, I will ring everyone up and tell them the match will be on, they will be excited and what’s more I will be up tomorrow for a practice."
Roy, Did they give you drugs for the pain in your ribs? Because if they did it’s affected your brain, it's minus 8 today at the Glebe and the forecast is the same all week.
Now this is very worrying because this is a grown adult. Again it would not be wise to mention this person's name because he is clearly unstable. He goes under the alias of 4 Candles, but you may know him better as Cockney Steve the printer.
We wish all our anglers a very Happy Christmas.
