Gordon Priddey with part of his match winning 175lb catch
Winter league report by Kev Russell:
This week my drawing hand Bob had pulled me out peg 28 on Pool 1 and I was up against the two top framers from this section last week, Andy Towers and Dom Lanni. It was going to be damage limitation again. Andy Kind had drawn the flier peg 20, first in the draw bag, again. At the all-in we all started on the feeder and I had two quick carp and a few buddies (baby carp). Soon the poles were out and Andy Towers was straight in to a run of good carp. I couldn't see Andy but was being kept informed by Mr Kind, who was also letting the whole match know he couldn't get a bite. Dom was also catching well on the long pole with cat meat. My short pole and corn tactic wasn't producing any fish. Halfway through and things began to change - the wind started to reverse tow the lake and we all started to catch shorter, the last two hours being quite awesome with carp and big jumping skimmers coming every drop in. I, along with others, had noticed that Andy Kind had gone very quiet and I could see him catching well. Someone added ‘it’s hard to moan with your tongue sticking out’ and at the end it was quite obvious that it was either Andy T or Dom in top position, with Andy K, myself and new member Scott Brooks, who was on peg 30, in contention for third. At the weigh-in Andy T took top spot with 148lb, with Dom coming a very close second with 140lb and Andy K sneaked in third with 104lb. Just behind them I had 95lb and Scott had 92lb.
The other section on Pool 1 was really a one horse race, with Gordon Priddey trouncing the field again with a magnificent display of short pole corn fishing on peg 14, putting a total of 175lb of carp and skimmers in his three nets - this is supposed to be winter league fishing. Second in this section was John Duncan who caught a mainly carp net of 147lb, and third was Scott Brown with 101lb, apparently he had so many fish in his swim he was netting two at a time!
Down on Pools 6 & 7 the fishing was a bit harder. Tony Woodings taking a good win from peg 109 on Pool 7 with 107 lb. Gordon Parker had duped Roy into thinking he was second, but Gordon had caught a ‘moby’ carp of 11lb on his last cast and managed to net it under Roy’s radar to beat him, taking 57lb to Roy’s 56lb. Pool 6 was won by Chris Allen with 85lb from peg 94, Dave Ringo was a close second on 81lb, closely followed by Carl Redman taking 78lb from the little girl’s peg 86.
A total of 2133lb of fish were caught by 26 anglers, and only one angler was frightened to weigh. And finally, I was called upon to do some counselling at the end. I won’t mention who I counselled but if you need you lawn mower fixing this week you may have to do it yourself.
