Andy 'Draw Bag' Kind
Winter league report by Kev Russell:
There was a light frost this Sunday morning but it didn't put off the 33 anglers that turned up at the Glebe to do battle in the latest winter league round. First to the draw bag, as usual, was Andy Kind. He was sporting a neat pair of ear defenders just in case he drew near to Dagga. Amazingly he drew out peg 20 - now considering he has sat on peg 19 twice, peg 18, and also peg 21 in the last four weeks he looked a sure favourite for a good placing in that section. John Duncan had come back to the fold and was happy to draw the little girl's peg 86, a sure winner. The peg everyone wanted was peg 11 as this is where Envo had bagged up last week, and most days during the week according to the spies. Unbelievably he drew it again, and was running to the peg, I think his gear was already there.
I was back on Pool 1 this week, at peg 6. I had Carl Redman to my right on peg 7 and Andy Parker on peg 5 to the left, but unfortunately Envo was also in our section. There was light southerly wind blowing over our backs and conditions looked good for a few fish. Envo was straight on the pole and after 5 minutes he had a big double figure fish, followed quickly by a second, around 6lb, and this had us all reaching for the poles. I managed to catch a couple of carp with some buddies and small skimmers on the corn but the pole line dried up. A change back to the straight lead, cast tight to the far bank with hair-rigged bread brought me five carp in the last hour. Brian had also caught well in the last hour, having put his pole down, and took the win again in the first section.
Scott Brooks took a good win in the middle section with the highest weight from Pool 1, having 18 carp mainly on the lead/corn down the middle for 79lb on peg 12. The end section was won by Domonic Lanni with three big carp and a few skimmers for 28lb.
My spies on Pools 6 and 7 had a few reports. Dagga had drawn peg 88 and on paper it looked like Dagga was in for a battering with JD on the little girl's peg 86. However Dagga slowly pulled away from John and peg 86 went very quiet. We don't know if he will be coming again for a while. The committee received an official complaint from John, claiming that Dagga was tapping the water with the end of his pole. The corresponding interview found that Dagga was fishing 16 metres and did not have the strength to hold his pole off the water at that distance. Dagga was given the much deserved win.
At peg 90 was Mick 'Python' Moore. You may recall that this was the angler who was terrified of the tiny grass snake at his peg last summer. Next time anyone meets Mick please point out that the Pretty Fish pool is Pool 2 and has not got an island in the middle of it. The word is that he should not be let out without adult supervision. Britain’s most improved angler Rob Clayton had a bad match on peg 107. He was broken by a monster fish on the lead early in the match. It turned out that the same fish was skilfully landed by Robber Marlow at peg 98, who hooked his rig through the eye of its swivel. The monster fish was all of 2lbs. The committee is to present Rob with a How-To-Tie-Knots book at Christmas.
Paul Parker battered his father Gordon Parker to win Pool 7, with Gordon coming second.
The final placings were as follows:
Pool 1
Section 1
Brian Envis 48lb 2oz, peg 11
Kev Russell 33lb 60z, peg 6
Carl Redman 24lb 15oz, peg 7
Section 2
Scott Brooks 78lb 6oz, peg 12
Gordon Priddey 58lb 11oz, peg 14
Trevor Slater 39lb 13oz, peg 21
Section 3
Dom Lanni 28lb 14oz, peg 26
Andy Towers 28lb 5oz, peg 25
Bob Eaton 16lb 9oz, peg 23
Pool 6
Dagga Ward 64lb 12oz, peg 88
Chris Allen 50lb 1oz, peg 92
John Duncan 33lb 12oz, peg 86
Pool 7
Paul Parker 37lb 8oz, peg 102
Gordon Parker 28lb 1oz, peg 100
Less Wright 22lb 11oz, peg 106
Two anglers were unable to weigh in this week, for one of these anglers it was his first match with us, and I did see him catch a few so I will urge him to weigh in next week, the other angler failed to land a fish and must try harder. Finally it was witnessed by all at the weigh in on Pool 1 that after receiving a thorough 'chip shopping', being battered both sides by Trev and Scott, that Andy Kind said he will be taking one of the last pegs in the bag next week - we will wait and see.
