Mick Moore - winner of section 3 pool 1
Winter league update provided by Kev Russell:
There was an overnight frost of -5C this week but it did not put off the regulars and to the surprise of us all Bob Eaton even made a comeback only 5 weeks after his accident. I requested that he draw me out a good peg but his drawing hand is not back to its best yet and I was heading for peg 18 on pool 1. It was going to be a noisy day though as to my left Dagga, AK and Scott were all in the killing zone which didn't give me much hope in the section placing, but at least there would be some banter.
As we started the Sun had got up and it was quite warm with not even a ripple on pool 1. Dagga was first to catch but Scott and Andy were soon following suit. I sat for an hour without a bite on the bread but a change to corn with a feeder gave me three quick carp for around 10lb. The pole then produced a few good skimmers but I wasn't keeping up. At one point in the match both Scott and Andy were both putting each other under so much pressure that they had both managed to cast into the trees opposite their pegs. Dagga soon quipped that it wasn't a synchronised tree pulling match. My match ended quite well with a good run of skimmers on a short pole paste line but it was too little too late.
The first section on pool 1 was a close affair and John Duncan took a win with Gordon Parker only one fish behind, with Shane Fowler only just behind that in third. In the middle section, Scott took the honours with a big catch of carp, he had got one back on his work colleague Andy, who came in second, with Dagga in third. The last section was also very close, with Mick Moore taking his first win. He was so elated that he reversed the charges to phone his mate Brian, who is in Dubai, to tell him the news. Dave Ringo fished a good match next to me taking carp and skimmers for second and Kerry Dyson was just behind in third.
Pool 1
Section 1
John Duncan 47-15, peg 4
Gordon Parker 46-03, peg 3
Shane Fowler 43-03, peg 9
Section 2
Scott Brown 61-05, peg 12
Andy Kind 40-15, peg 14
Dagga Ward 34-01, peg 15
Section 3
Mick Moore 39-12, peg 28
Dave Ringo 35-10, peg 20
Kerry Dyson 30-10, peg 24
As pool 5 had been fishing well it was pegged with 6 pegs. This proved to be a good section with the top spot going to Chris Allen, on the narrow end peg 77, who took 14 carp for an impressive 93lb. Chris took five of his fish from in the margin! At the other end Matt Hall took second and Gary Miller third.
Pool 5
Chris Allen 93-14, peg 77
Matt Hall 88-01, peg 85
Gary Miller 60-10, peg 80
Stu O'Donnell was pushed hard on pool 6 but took the win from the little girl's peg 86. Close behind were Carl Redman and Chris Needham. Bob Eaton managed to keep dry and enjoyed getting back to it, taking 29lb to the scales from peg 96.
Pool 6
Stu O Donnell 47-12, peg 86
Carl Redman 41-06, peg 90
Chris Needham 40-14, peg 92
Pool 7 was the hardest fishing with only four anglers weighing in, Albert Bray taking the win from Jim Chessman in second and Paul Gardener in third.
Pool 7
Albert Bray 39-10, peg 104
Jim Chessman 23-00, peg 106
Paul Gardener 14-8, peg 101
And finally, on Monday I decided to phone Dagga's lawn mower emporium for some counselling after my poor performance. He cheered me up with a little story about a top professional angler from Leicester. Apparently this angler is now a team captain and was shepherding his flock on Saturday's match on the local canal. He had chastised one team member who had done it all wrong, fishing too heavy, another was told he shouldn't have used any hemp, and another was told he should have put some hemp in. These three anglers who got it so wrong came in first, second and third!
