Gary Miller - second on pool 7
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
After a week of very low temperatures, and even a bit of snow, no one was sure how the Glebe would fish. Even the regular practisers had struggled to find a bit of water clear of ice to practice on. 30 anglers turned out to fish and I decided to space out the pegging using pools 1, 5, 6, and 7. Due to a bit of mathematical error, Dagga not being able to count, 31 pegs were put in the draw bag. Bob had got his drawing hand working properly this week and he drew me on peg 105, pool 7, he also drew himself one of his favourites, peg 30, end peg on pool 1.
The middle of pool 7 has been the killing zone for a few months now so I was hoping the fact it had been frozen on Saturday wasn't going to slow things down too much. The wind was blowing from the west and the water temperature was 4.4C. There was also lots of water flowing in on both the end pegs. Gordon Parker had drawn peg 109 and shouted down for some stick floats to trot his peg! I had a few casts to clip up with a small lead cast tight across to the far bank and was pleased to see a few liners, in fact my quivertip was back and forth like a fiddlers elbow. I started on this line with a small hair-rigged bread punch and was in within minutes but unfortunately this carp soon freed itself. The next two casts proved to be the same, carp 3, me 0. The indications then steadied up a bit for me, Gary Miller to my right on 107 had started to catch a few carp though, and he was getting them in the net. With an hour gone I decided to put a few green swimstim pellets in with a feeder with a hope of bringing a few fish later in the match. A switch to the pole at 6m with green swimstim paste gave me a good run of big skimmers but this didn't last and with around 10 in the net both Gary and Andy Towers, to my left, had started to catch on this line and soon overtook me. There was nothing for it but to go back onto the lead and hope some carp would have a go.
The water temperature had risen to 5.5C and the carp had started to have a bit of a go and in the last hour I added 6 good fish, two of which I caught in the last five minutes, one just minutes before the final whistle, this fish intercepting the bait the second it hit the water.
We had the usual banter before the weigh-in, everyone misjudging their weight etc., but I thought I was in for second as Gary had caught skimmers really well on caster over groundbait towards the end. As it turned out I had just pipped him with that last fish. We all need a bit of luck in our fishing don't we?
Pool 7
Kev Russell 42-04, peg 105
Gary Miller 40-14, peg 107
Andy Towers 30-01, peg 103
Reports from pool 1 were good and most were catching a few fish. The shallower pegs in the middle again proving to be the hardest area and the section results were again very close.
Pool 1

John Palmer 67-04, peg 7
Andy Kind 64-10, peg 5
Chris Hall 57-07, peg 9
Section 2
Gordon Priddey 49-07, peg 14
Matt Hall 34-07, peg 12
Stu O'Donnell, 21-00, peg 16
Section 3
Dom Lanni 26-01, peg 22
Bob Eaton 21-05, peg 30
Jeff Reast 16-07, peg 24
Due to Dagga’s inaccurate counting only 4 anglers were drawn on pool 5, and only one of these would not win any money. Rob Clayton was back from Spain and had drawn the fancied peg 77 at the narrow end. Dagga had also drawn a flier, at the other end, with Chris Allen and Carl Redman in between. I knew there had been some strange goings on as I had seen Dagga on the wrong side of the lake twice from were I sat on pool 7. It was suggested that Dagga was under so much pressure not to be beaten by Rob that he had resorted to some dodgy tactics. These will need to be investigated by the committee. Rob had admitted to catching one fish that was at least 10lb in weight and Dagga was really sweating. Chris took top spot with 12 carp for 60lb 14oz, Carl came in second with some really big skimmers and a few carp, and Rob's two carp weighed 6lb each, Giving Dagga third!
Pool 5
Chris Allen 60-14, peg 81
Carl Redman, 39-07, peg 79
Dagga Ward, 25-01, peg 83
Pool 6 was really quiet throughout the day but there had been a few fish caught, Albert Bray taking top spot with a good net of skimmers on the worm and a few carp on the corn. Kerry Dyson came in second, drawing the little girl's peg on a bad day as there was a real torrent of cold water flowing in through the inlet pipe, and he was only to catch on a close line. Rich Morgan came in third.
Pool 6
Albert Bray 46-14, peg 90
Kerry Dyson 38-04, peg 86
Rich Morgan 21-03, peg 92
All in all a good day's fishing for most. One of the highlights of my day was to see two male buzzards in an ariel courting display with a larger female over the fishery. Hopefully this is a sign that the spring is not too far away.
