Chris Allen - 197lb off pool 1

Chris Allen - 197lb off pool 1

Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:

As this is the first match of the final group of four I will update you on the league placing so far. Five groups of four matches have been fished with each angler's best three matches in each group counting for points. There is also a total weight score of the counting matches in case of a tie on points.

It is very close on points throughout the league and the final group scores will decide what has been a brilliantly fought league. Good luck to all competitors.

Top 10 league placings after 20 matches (15 counted):

Chris Allen - 141 points - 932lb
Gordon Priddey - 137 points - 1005lb
Domonic Lanni - 136 points - 820lb
Andy Towers - 136 points - 766lb
Kevin Russell - 134 points - 742lb
David Ward - 131 points - 716lb
Carl Redman - 129 points - 633lb
Gordon Parker - 123 points - 790lb
Andy Kind - 123 points - 788lb
Stu O'Donnell - 116 points - 595lb

Onto this weeks match:

Considering the weather forecast of torrential rain and strong winds a good turnout of 41 anglers were at the draw. The top three in the league all pulled end-pegs so the battle for the championship was well and truly on. I was drawn on pool 1 this week, peg 6. I was confident of a few fish as I had been talked into a bit of tackle testing on Saturday and caught lots of big skimmers on peg 7. Scott had also caught well on peg 6, as had Stu O'Donnell on peg 8. I opted to start on the bomb tight across with hair-rigged bread and had four fish in the first hour. I could see Chris Allen catching a few on peg 1, and Chris Needham in the next section also appeared to be bagging a few. The skimmers never fed like they had on Saturday and I was forced to fish the match on the tip. I ended up with 14 smallish carp and a few big skimmers but unfortunately finished in forth place.

Winner of the first section was Chris Allen putting an incredible 197lb onto the scales, he was close to being penalized as he had just under the legal ton in each of his nets. Chris caught most of his fish along the margin of his peg on the long pole. John Hall was second with a good catch of small carp on the long pole and Paul Parker came in third also on the long pole.

The second section was a tight match with Les Wright coming out on top. Very close behind and back in the frame was Chris Needham. Bob Eaton was also very close in third but had commented that he had to endure some nastiness from Gordon Parker on the next peg. This could have been due to the battering that Bob was giving him as it is quite out of character for the Master of Mallory. For the record one of the comments made, on hearing the Mallory ambulance, 'your taxi's here Bob', quite hurtful.

The last section was won by Trev Slater beating his rival Rob Clayton, but as promised Rob took his first big name scalp, beating Andy Kind from the next peg. This put Andy into third place on peg 30.

Pool 1

Section 1
Chris Allen 197-09, peg 1
John Hall 72-10, peg 4
Paul Parker 48-00, peg 3

Section 2
Les Wright 61-02, peg 19
Chris Needham 59-01, peg 15
Bob Eaton 57-04, peg 18

Section 3
Trev Slater 35-07, peg 27
Rob Clayton 29-04, peg 28
Andy Kind 23-08, peg 30

With a strong SE wind blowing pool 5 was always going to be hard and only four of the seven anglers put fish on the scales, with Paul Bates taking the win from end peg 85. Tim Palmer took second from the other end peg 77 with John Palmer third at the next peg. I must add that Scott 'tackle tester' Brown was drawn on this lake but at the weigh in he could not be found. A thorough search of the fishery was ordered including an underwater search; Mr Brown was nowhere to be seen. If anyone can shed any light on this subject please contact Mr Ward on the usual number. Rumour has it that he was suicidal having failed to have a bite all day - even Rob Clayton gets at least one.

Pool 5
Paul Bates 33-06, peg 85
Tim Palmer 31-00, peg 77
John Palmer 22-13, peg 78

On pool 6 John Duncan proved he didn't need to sit on the easy peg to take a win and had a good catch of silver fish to take the top place. Only ounces behind was Matt Hall with Kerry Dyson on the little girl's peg in third.

Pool 6
John Duncan 40-02, peg 94
Matt Hall 39-08, peg 89
Kerry Dyson 35-01, peg 86

New member Gary Saddler took a fine win on pool 7 against stiff opposition. At the next peg 'out of practice' Roy took second place with Gordon Priddey in third.

Pool 7
Gary Saddler 36-12, peg 105
Roy Marlow 30-10, peg 107
Gordon Priddey 27-07, peg 109

And finally, Much of the fishery is like a bog, most of the blame naturally goes to the over practices, however many areas of the fishery are churned up in areas where the practices are not going. The culprit, apart from the grooves made when he gets stuck (that he has paid Honest Jim Chessman to fill in), has been seen on several occasions in most matches creeping along the far bank to release his hook length caught in the rushes. Apparently the culprit, who we all know is always trying to pull a stroke, uses this ploy for another reason. If you look closely you will find that not only does he release his tackle, he strategically drops it alongside the rushes for perfect presentation!!! Is this the reason for his recent form? Questions need to be asked and there may need to be a committee decision on this matter. If Scott Brown can be found he may be asked to join the committee to pass judgement. Mr Ward will obviously not be part of the decision making process.

Russelli.
