Kerry Dyson - winner on pool 7
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
Again there was a good turnout of 43 anglers at the draw. As I arrived the banter had already begun with Dagga asking Scott for double pools to pay for the search party following his hasty departure before the weigh-in last week. My assistant, Rob Clayton, helped me sort out 43 pegs on pools 1, 5, 6 and 7 - it is proving to be good counting practice for him.
The end pegs were nearly all gone by the time Bob did my draw and I ended up with peg 94 towards the far end of pool 6. I asked Roy for some information as he had been sat with Gordon Parker practising at this peg the day before. He had also spent a bit of time with Stu O'Donnell, also practising at the next peg. Roy’s suggestion was to attack the peg with feeder and paste, as he was confident they would have a go across on the far bank. I have not fished this method for a long while but was prepared to give it a go.
I set off down to my peg and soon realised it was going to be a good match. Andy Kind had drawn the little girl's peg 86, so it looked like we were fishing for second before we had started. I got to my peg to find Stu O'Donnell still sitting on peg 96. Had he been there all night? Gordon Parker had at least shuffled up one peg at 92. I was sure they both must have a plan and they were keeping it close, but I was pretty sure it wasn't the same as mine.
It was a slow start with only a few fish caught at the girlie end of the lake. After an hour or so I started to get a few indications followed by a couple of smallish carp and a couple of good skimmers, all on the swimstim paste hook bait. Everyone else had switched to the pole. Gordon had taken a couple of carp long on the corn but Stu was struggling so I decided to stick it out on the feeder and started to put a few carp in the net. I could see AK and Paul Bates catching at the far end and also Paul Gardener catching well on peg 90.
At our end the pole wasn't really producing so I stuck to the plan and was satisfied to have put 12 carp in the net and was hopeful of getting into the frame. As it turned out I was just edged out by Paul Bates with a fine catch of skimmers from peg 87, beating me by only 4oz. It was very close between AK and PG with Andy relieved to come out tops from the pressure peg.
Pool 6
Andy Kind 65-12, LGP 86
Paul Gardener 61-05, peg 90
Paul Bates 46-11, peg 87
Pool 7 was very quiet with everyone concentrating hard. I think the reason for this was Rob Clayton’s sudden rise to form and all were desperate not to be his next conquest. Kerry Dyson took first place from peg 99 with Shane Fowler second with a good catch of silver fish. Eric Burton was third from the far end peg 109
Unfortunately Rob didn't beat anyone this week but weighed in a good catch of silver fish. Unfortunately though he was accused of being cruel for keeping one carp in a keepnet all on its own throughout the match.
Pool 7
Kerry Dyson 31-05, peg 99
Shane Fowler 28-15, peg 101
Eric Burton 25-13, peg 109
The fliers on pool 5 were again drawn by the two OAP’s, Gordon Priddey sitting at the end peg 77 and Brian Envis on 78. Roy had taken the last peg in the bag at the other end on 85. Again there were a few big fish caught in this lake. Gordon made no mistakes and took another win with Scott Brooks in second and Roy just behind in third.
Pool 5
Gordon Priddey 53-12, peg 77
Scott Brooks 29-01, peg 79
Roy Marlow 25-09, peg 85
Scott was back on form in the first section on pool 1 and although losing a few fish to a snag on the far bank he took a good catch of carp on the feeder. Trev Slater didn't want the pressure peg 1 at the draw but it was good to him and he came in second. Dom Lanni had a good match at peg 9 to take third.
The middle section was convincingly won by John Hall at peg 18 - he had a big catch of carp on the feeder and maggot. Chris Allen was in the frame again and looking good for the league in second and new member Gaz Saddler edged out John Duncan for third. In the last section Grantham’s Freddy Bennett took a great win from peg 28, fishing caster at 6m. He took eight good carp, several barbel and a few big skimmers for 53lb 8oz. Chris Hall was second from peg 30 and Rich Wells was close behind in third.
Pool 1
Section 1
Scott Brown 68-12, peg 3
Trev Slater 42-10, peg 1
Dom Lanni 37-12, peg 9
Section 2
John Hall 89-00, peg 18
Chris Allen 42-04, peg 12
Gaz Saddler 39-12, peg 19
Section 3

Chris Hall 34-10, peg 30
Rich Wells 32-04, peg 24
As we were weighing in pool 6 Roy had commented that he had struggled to place his bait tight across to the far bank of pool 5 due to the strong SW wind. A certain angler that was being weighed in commented that he should have done the great escape trick like Dagga and walked round with a tin of corn up his trouser leg. Now we don't know if this was sour grapes from this angler, he had come last from a peg that he had sat on all weekend, or if there is any truth in this story - if anyone sees Mr Ward acting suspiciously on the far bank please inform another member of the committee.
Finally, Mr Ward is still up for the nasty trophy, keeping his points tally up this weekend by abusing section winner Scott Brown again. Scott had politely asked how much he weighed after putting his fish on the scales, Mr Ward was quick to say 'around 25 stone', very hurtful.
