Andy Towers - winner on pool 5
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
Although the forecast was predicting horrendous weather 43 anglers were at the draw for the penultimate winter league match. Bob did my draw as usual and much to my surprise pulled me out an end peg, number 85 on the end of pool 5. I made a quick call to Roy, who was at the fishing show at the NEC. He had fished this peg last week and gave me some valuable info. The plan was to start on the swimstim pellet feeder with maggot on the hook across to the far bank and feed a margin line with casters and fish maggot over the top. Roy also suggested a rig to fish swimstim paste on the same line.
As I started the match the wind had become really strong and casting the feeder was really tricky. The first cast landed a bit off target but the rod tip pulled straight round. As I played this fish a quick look down the lake showed both Andy Towers and Carl Redman were both into fish straight away. Unfortunately both myself and Carl both lost our first fish but they were soon followed by a couple more. Andy was really bagging on the feeder but he switched to the pole and was beginning to catch well. I decided to have a look up the margin. I had a few perch and a couple of large skimmers but the carp were absent.
Around midday Roy called to see how I was getting on and I told him I was getting battered by Carl and Andy. The call was interrupted by my elastic flying out of my pole with a double figure fish attached to the end, it was soon in jail and three more followed shortly after, not quite as big but very welcome. The last couple of hours were a real test of endurance with gale force winds and snow blizzards battering the fishery. A close-in line produced a few more fish to the paste to prove that Roy’s info was spot on once again. Andy just missed out on the ton with his 16 fish catch giving him the section win. Carl had some real lumps and put 10 fish on the scales for 83lb and second place while I finished with 13 carp and third place. The lake had fished really well with six anglers having an average weight of around 68lb.
Pool 5
Andy Towers 99-05, peg 80
Carl Redman 83-02, peg 82
Kev Russell 70-14, peg 85
Pool 6 proved to be difficult again but Paul Gardener went one better than last week taking first place with carp on the bomb with hair rigged corn. Stu Johnson came in second from the far end peg and Pete Wooton was third on the little girl's peg 86.
Pool 6
Paul Gardener 48-09, peg 92
Stu Johnson 33-09, peg 96
Pete Wooton 30-01, peg 86
Les Wright did the business on pool 7 with a good catch of small carp from the wrong end the pool. I say the wrong end because I had called Andy Kind for some info during the match and he said the fish were all at the far end of the lake - he was sitting next to Les! Gary Saddler came in second with Stu O'Donnell third from the end peg.
Pool 7
Les Wright 34-02, peg 101
Gaz Saddler 31-14, peg 107
Stu Odonnell 24-11, peg 109
Pool 1 was most affected by the weather but a few anglers put in good performances and the section weights were close again.
Section 1
Scott Brown 70-06, peg 10
Keith Hudson 61-08, peg 6
Chris Needham 58-06, peg 4
Section 2
Dave 'Dagga' Ward 62-06, peg 12
John Hall 56-00, peg 18
Gordon Priddey 53-12, peg 21
Section 3
Chris Allen 40-00, peg 30
Bob Eaton 35-02, peg 25
Fred Bates 27-08, peg 22
I did receive a few reports from this lake. Scott Brown on peg 10 cast out at the all-in and it actually landed in peg 14, causing many shouts of hurtful abuse from the ever nasty Dagga. A quick recast was in order and brought a quick rip round bite and a nice 6 lb carp. Steve 'Pro Angler' Porter, on peg 9, was constantly accidentally landing his feeder into Scott's peg during the match. Scott being the nicest angler on the bank kindly let him do and was amused by the constant barrage of excuses. Mr Ported still failed to trouble the scales though!
Paul Bates on peg 13 actually set up then, after a really big gust of wind that blew both his nets clear out of the water and moved his box, was the first to give in to the conditions, packing up before the all-in. Rumour has it that Paul was not prepared to sit next to the nastiest angler known to man. No names mentioned but Dagga Ward was on peg 12. Gary Miller on Peg 1 was soon walking the bank to retrieve his tackle after a wayward cast due to the wind, but was he really taking a leaf out of Dagga's book and secretly feeding his peg?
After an hour of the match Dagga decided it was time for a tactical change, so he visited Scott to say lots of nice things to him!!! Unbeknown to Scott that he was just out to see what he was catching on, Dagga returned to his peg and did not look back, putting a good net of carp and barbel on the scales!
Finally I must report some strange goings on again. I was able to spot Mr Ward, from my peg on pool 5, going down to 'Uglies' pool 3 on several occasions. When I questioned him he said that the wind had blown the coat off his back, now I would have said that was near on impossible so if anyone can shed any light on this matter please contact the committee.
