Winter league winner, Chris Allen (R), with runner-up, Gordon Priddey
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
With 23 matches already fished we already had a winner and runner-up in our winter league series. Chris Allen took top spot with a total points score of 170 and a weight of 1213lb from the 18 counted matches. Very close behind on 165 and 1195lb was runner-up Gordon Priddey.
The competition was not over though, and 3rd and 4th place were yet to be decided. I was still in contention but needed a flier peg and for the two anglers above me to fail miserably. With an east wind blowing, a draw on pool 1 would have been my first choice but alas I ended up down on pool 7. This lake had been fished the day before and had been quite hard for the competitors. Bob had drawn me peg 104. As I got down to my peg I realised that Andy Towers had drawn the end peg, 109. Andy was one of the anglers I had to beat for the final league positions. I had also drawn between Roy and Scott. After the start it soon became evident that the fish were not happy, perhaps due to the cold easterly wind.
Andy was the first to catch, a carp on the feeder. I had started on the hair-rigged bread punch with a straight lead, but after 2 hours had not had a fish, a change to double red maggot with a small feeder and green swimstim groundbait brought me a fish straight away. This method caught me 8 small carp and it looked close with Andy taking 5 carp and John having 6, the rest of the lake had really struggled. Roy commented that he had overfed his peg with his first cast! Scott never recovered from his early start (he had put his alarm clock back instead of forward). Andy came out tops with the help of a double figure fish, with me second and John Hall in third. This put Andy into third in the final placings.
Pool 7
Andy Towers 24-04, peg 109
Kevin Russell 21-02, peg 104
John Hall 19lb, peg 101
Pool 6 also proved to be very difficult with Gary Miller taking 4 carp for top spot from peg 86.
Pool 6
Gary Miller 13-11, peg 86
Albert Bray 6-10, peg 90
John Duncan 4-00, peg 87
Pool 5 even suffered from a drop in form. The end pegs were first and second, and Dagga Ward took just one fish for third place.
Pool 5
Tony Woodings 42-01, peg 76
Chris Hall 23-08, peg 85
Dagga Ward 7-00, peg 80
Up on pool 1 the weights were a bit better. In the first section Andy Kind took top spot again from peg 1. In the middle section there was a tight battle with both Gordon Priddey and John Palmer putting 82lbs on the scales. The final section saw another good performance from Les Wright to take top spot. Burton 'Pro' Chris Downs came in second with Dom Lanni in third. This was enough to give Dom fourth place in the league.
Pool 1
Section 1
Andy Kind 55-10, peg 1
Eric Burton 47-07, peg 12
Scott Brooks, 33-09, peg 10
Section 2
Gordon Priddey 82-13, peg 21
John Palmer 82-01, peg 20
Steve Porter 41-05, peg 13
Section 3
Les Wright 39-11, peg 23
Chris Downs 33-14, peg 24
Dom Lanni 28-09, peg 28
Finally I would like to thank everyone participating in the league for making it a success again this year, with everyone joining in the fun and not taking it too seriously. The weights throughout the winter have been tremendous as has been the competition with often just ounces deciding the section places.
I will be adding reports of our other matches throughout the year so please keep having a look in, thanks, Kev Russell.
