Kerry Dyson - winner on pool 5
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
We had an excellent turn out of 52 anglers for our first winter league round, with plenty of new faces at the draw. The fishery has been fishing well with some mild autumn weather so everyone was looking forward to a good day's sport. There was a south westerly breeze and a morning temperature of 12 degrees. I had a good draw, Bob pulled me out peg 76, which is the narrow end peg on pool 5 and a peg I haven't fished before, it looked good with the wind blowing into my end of the lake. I opted to start on the pole instead of the feeder, against Roy's advice I must add. Within minutes of the all-in I was wondering if I had got it completely wrong as Albert Bray at the next peg was into a good carp straight away on the feeder and a couple of anglers at the other end were also into fish.
I stuck it out on the pole for around 2 hours with no bites at all. I could see fish being caught at the other end of the lake and a phone call to Roy for some counselling didn't help much as he wasn't catching on pool 7 either. I did get off my box to have a look over onto pool 4 and Scott Brown on the end peg 66 was having a bad day - he had only a couple of roach and a skimmer and was asking for Dagga’s mobile to get booked in early for some counselling.
I decided to try the feeder, after around half an hour of regular casting with swimstim in the feeder and three red maggots on the hook my first carp of around 5lb was in the net. I could see a few fish moving over the bait on the far side and started to put a few fish together. I was having to wait a while for bites but all the fish were a good size and worth waiting for. With around an hour remaining I saw some movement over my margin peg which I had been feeding with chopped worm and caster. I dropped in with half a worm on the hook and straight away a large fish was pulling out my laggy. I added another 5 carp in this last hour but didn't feel like I had done enough to catch the anglers at the other end.
As I packed up we had all the usual banter, no one had caught anything. Scott Brown was quick to point out that he had received a proper battering from his buddy Paul Bates at the next peg, Scott had only caught 3 carp! We started to weigh-in pool 4 at Scott’s peg, in his net were 9 carp weighing 63lb and he won the lake, Paul quickly added that he should now be known as Scott 'Pinocchio' Brown. Kerry Dyson won a closely fought match on pool 5, from the end peg 85, with one of three tons weighing in 16 big carp for 102lb.
Down on pool 6, John Hall took the win from the wrong end of the lake on peg 96, the previous day anglers had blanked at that end. Pool 7 was also won from the far end with Rich Wells taking 85lb from peg 109, although Roy had not caught many he managed to put 72lb on the scales for 4th place. Pool 1 had fished well with the other two tons winning the sections. New member Dan Hull, who I am told had blanked on pool 6 the previous day, won the top section with 109lb from peg 24. Max Higgot won the other section and had the highest weight overall with a tremendous catch of 141lb taken fishing 14m along the margin of peg 1 with paste.
In total 2740lb of fish were put on the scales with only eight anglers FTW (frightened to weigh). It had been a closely fought match throughout the lakes, and a good opener to what looks to be a competitive league.
And finally I must add that although Mr Kind wasn't present at the match he had sent a new medallion that at present is being worn by Mr Ward. This is to be worn by anyone who has the misfortune to be beaten, by a certain angler, from the next peg. I won't mention his name as I think it is very nasty to pick on someone who is trying so hard to improve his angling. It has also been noted that the medallion is a good excuse for not catching much, as it is very heavy!!!!
