Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
There had been a few cold nights prior to the latest round of the winter league and on Sunday morning the Glebe again had a covering of frost. The 46 anglers were all hoping for a good draw, with a few less than the previous week I could afford to spread the pegs a little further apart to give almost everyone a spare peg at least at one side. The end pegs were still looking a favoured draw and Bob did my draw as usual - end peg 30 on pool 1 was where I was going to spend the day, I was hoping the frost wasn't going to spoil it.
Pool 1 was flat calm when we started, the Sun hadn’t reached me up at the far end and it was quite cold. For this reason I had opted to fish the straight lead across with hair-rigged bread. I had also set up a corn rig to fish at 11m and a deep margin rig to fish 11m up to the right of the peg. Things were very slow for a start and as I could see the whole of my section it was evident there wasn't a lot being caught in the first hour. I had a few taps on my quiver tip but only one 8oz carp was in my net after 1 ½ hours. Looking up the lake a few fish were beginning to be caught on the pole, I decided to have a go on the 11m line, after a few small skimmers I hooked a carp around 3lb which annoyingly I lost at the net. Things were not looking good.
My get out of jail card was always going to be the margin swim, if the fish obliged, so with around 2 ½ hours gone I had to have a look. After a perch, chub, roach, skimmer, crucian and a small buddy carp my first decent fish was hooked on a half worm. It was a good fish around 8lb and just as I was slipping it into the net my mobile rang, it was Roy, who was on tackle show duty and not fishing. I explained that I was struggling, but it seemed that so was everyone else. After some counselling from Roy I got my head down and caught five more good carp and an assortment of silver fish, before the line died a little. I had a look up the fishery and a few anglers were catching on the long pole so I went out on the 11m line again. Nothing happened for around ½ hour, then just as I hooked a fish, Roy called again. We chatted for a couple of minutes while I played the fish but when it came up I explained I had to go, this fish was huge and nearly didn't fit into my landing net. Another fish followed that was almost as big before the peg went quiet.
There was an hour left and with another carp caught in the margin I decided to put in another keep net to keep safe on the 100lb rule if they went mad in the last hour, I caught three more before it was time to shout the 'all out'.
We weighed in from peg one where Fred Bennett, from Grantham, had caught well in the margin weighing 74lb to take a good section win. There were a few good 60lb+ weights down the lake and 65lb was winning my section with just me to weigh. I put 17lbs of silver fish on the scales and 12 carp for a total of 106lb, the largest of which was exactly 16lb! I was well chuffed.
Things were quiet on the other lakes and I haven't had too much info, although the middle pegs of the lakes had won on all but 7 where again the end peg had given Dom Lanni the win. Young Jarrad Smith had taken a scalp, beating corn king Gordon Parker at the next peg to win pool 6.
