Rob Bowser on pool 5 with top weight of the day

Rob Bowser on pool 5 with top weight of the day

Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:

The switch to Greenwich Mean Time had apparently caught out a few of our match anglers, strange when the clocks go back, you would think they would be an hour early. We eventually got 55 anglers in pegs around the Glebe. This week Bob had drawn me a peg in the middle of pool 4. There was a strong south westerly wind blowing right to left and it was very mild. There were also a few fish rolling along the length of the lake so we were all hopeful they would have a feed.

Before the all-in I had decided to take a gamble and as the match started instead of the usual feeder to the far bank approach, I fished around two thirds across with a straight lead and a small boilie. This was based on the fact that Roy feeds pools 4 and 5 with a lot of boilies throughout the year. Straight away it was apparent that the fish were not going mad, and we all sat for around ¾ hour with nothing to show. Steve Conway was first to get a carp on the feeder across on the far side. I was thinking that I had made a mistake, then my tip pulled round and my first carp was in the net. I followed this with ten more carp and was doing quite well I thought, although they were relatively small fish for this lake. Only Steve, two pegs to my right, was catching. With around 1 ½ hours left to fish the wind suddenly dropped and the lake went flat like a mirror, I stopped catching. Gary Sadler on the next peg then began to catch on the long pole, and he put 4 large carp in the net before the end.

At the weigh-in Steve Conway had won it easily, doubling my weight. I was just in front of Gary, his four fish weighing almost as much as my eleven. I had enjoyed the match and was pleased that my gamble worked enough to get me into second place.

Up on pool 1 Leicester's pro angler, Steve Porter, took a fine win in the middle section taking the highest weight on this lake, catching on the feeder. I did have reports though that he had caught fish from both of the pegs either side of his. Young Dan Hull was top in the first section with a good catch on the short pole. The last section was won by none other than Burton's pro angler and Fish-o-mania qualifier, TV personality Chris Downs.

On pool 5 there was an epic battle between Rob Bowser and Rich Bedder, with both anglers getting very close to the ton. Rob just edged in front with a few larger fish and it was suggested that Rich might have just fished a little better if he had got up in time for the draw! There was a bit of a shock when last years winter league champion Chris Allen, on one of his favourite pegs, end peg 76, failed to make the coin. At least his travelling partner CD could tell him how good his match was on the way home to Burton.

Down on the bottom lakes there was a major upset as our most improved angler Rob Clayton added another name to the medallion, beating Scott Brooks from the next peg. Rob finished third in his section thanks to a good carp skilfully hooked on the final whistle and landed under a lot of pressure from his fellow anglers, well done Rob. New member Ian Saiger took the win on pool 6. Pool 7 was a very close match with Master of Mallory Bob Eaton taking the win from Jarrad Smith.
