Roy with his winning catch from pool 6
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
Some of our anglers are away on team winter leagues on alternate weekends but still we had 48 anglers turn out for the fourth match of our winter series. Rob Clayton was at the draw early with his medallion, freshly stamped with his latest victim's name for all to see, it took pride of place on the drawing table alongside the Nasty Trophy that still has not been awarded.
The over practicers had been up during the week and had all caught a few in the mild conditions. Sunday morning though was a lot colder with an air temperature just above freezing and no wind on the lakes, so it could be hard. Master of Mallory and angling legend Bob Eaton pulled me out peg 92 down on pool 6 and I was pleased to hear that he had sat on the peg on mid-week practice and bagged up with carp and skimmers.
I opted to start gently with just a single piece of bread punch cast across to the far side. Straightaway the four anglers to my left were into fish whilst my tip remained motionless. I changed to a small feeder as it was producing a few fish for the others, but still I had no indications. I persevered with this for a couple of hours but caught nothing. A look on the pole produced my first fish, a 10oz roach then a small perch but that was the end of that 'run' of fish. Roy was three pegs to my left and seemed to be constantly playing fish but was telling everyone that he was being beaten by both the anglers to his left - I have heard that one before and I wasn't so sure.
I eventually managed my first carp. I think it had been washed up the lake by the bow wave from the monster that Roy had been playing for the previous ten minutes on his new prototype 9 foot wand. As I put this carp in the net Roy called out to tell me that he had informed Dagga of my catch, to which Dagga had replied 'it must be solid', now I thought that was very nasty and totally uncalled for. I didn't catch any more and I was very disappointed with only 7lb to show for my efforts and last in the section. Roy came to see if I would be okay and told me not to put my kit on the nearest bonfire on the way home as suggested by someone, although he hasn't told me who yet.
Roy came out tops with a good catch of carp including the double figure monster, with former Master of Mallory Gordon Parker a good second with a good catch of silver fish from the unfancied far end of the lake.
Over on pool 7, Rob Bowser had done the business with a catch of carp from peg 105 opposite me. He had got up to have a look over to our pool at one point but had to jump back down when his rod nearly pulled in. Next to him Stu O’Donnell had a day similar to mine but was also mourning the breakage of a large pole section, ooch!!! I didn't hear any reports from pools 4 and 5 but there were certainly some fish caught. New member Ady Hull took overall top weight on the day from the margin of peg 85 on pool 5 with a great catch of 95lb, with another new member Wayne O’Beirne on the next peg in second spot with 72lb.
Tops on pool 4 was regular framer Dom Lanni with 81lb with second place going to young Dan Hull. Up on pool 1, Max Higgot once again won the first section, almost doubling everyone else's weight from peg 2. John Palmer won the second section from peg 25 with the top weight on the lake of 72lb. Rob Clayton had drawn peg 30 but failed to add another name to the medallion - Brian Hill had kept his nerve at the next peg to stave off a battering in difficult conditions and went home a happy angler. Surprisingly in the difficult conditions only three anglers were frightened to weigh and so it was generally a good match.
Roy suggested that it was not a good idea for me to book in for the usual counseling from Dagga after my poor performance, as it was quite obvious that he is once again showing that nasty streak that won him the trophy in 2006. Nominations are still open.

And finally, for the last ten days Leicester's Professional Angler Steve Porter has caused major problems with the phone lines. They have been overwhelmed with calls from him, telling everyone how well he has done in recent matches. Last Wednesday was the last time anyone heard from him and that's when BT only just averted a total overload. Everyone in the Angling World and in fact everyone else heard that he had battered Rob Wooton off the next peg. BT has spent millions on extra capacity in case this happens again, although sadly not one phone call since then. Does this mean he has himself been battered yet again?
Mr. Ward is being extremely nasty again to his fellow anglers. It has been mentioned that nomination papers will soon be out to see who will win the Nasty Trophy. His name is now near the top of the list along with others who cannot be mentioned, such as Andy Nasty Kind, who we understand is avoiding coming to the matches because he thinks he is favorite to win. Rob Clayton, who stands a good a chance as Mr. Ward said, this is the only angling trophy that Rob could win, now that is very nasty. Chris Allen is on the list for saying that the new bridge was indestructible having been tested by Scott Brown. John Duncan has a nomination for his outrageous outburst to a very nice lady at a recent Mallory Event. Mr. Ward has nominated Kev Russell because he writes hurtful things about him. Andy Towers for suggesting one of the shorter members of the committee may drown if he fell into 2 feet of water in the big lake. Amazingly even Robber Marlow has been nominated; certain people have said that he tells fibs about what has been caught around him. Then we have several anglers who think they are not in the running but their names are also on the list. The results will be by a secret ballet that only one person will have access to, that way there is no possibility of it being fixed. I wonder who that person will be?
