Roy collects the medallion after being Claytoned

Roy collects the medallion after being Claytoned

Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:

This was the fifth and final match in our first group of winter league matches and, with 58 anglers, our biggest so far. The banter had already started at the draw. Mr Ward, still reeling from the announcement that Friday's Shakespeare schools under 14’s national had been won from the peg that he had blamed for his demise the previous week, began the banter by announcing that it was someone's Birthday, using a very unkind name for the person involved. I must add that the angler in question was very embarrassed and this was noted by the committee. Mr Ward then pressed on to present Scott Brooks with the Clayton medallion, just to let everyone know that his was not the only name on it. This in turn provoked a Red Bull charged Rob into threats of more casualties in the near future.

The draw got under way and I was looking to be in a better area than the previous week, and not next Mr Clayton. Rob had already drawn a good peg, which Roy had won from the previous week. I was relieved when Bob pulled me out peg 1 on pool 1. It hadn't had much form for the past couple of weeks but I was safe from a Claytoning. We soon realised, with only two pegs left in the bag, that either Roy or Dagga was going to be sat next to Rob, the relief on Mr Ward face was clear for all to see when it wasn't him. Could Rob’s biggest angling achievement be just a few hours away?

I arrived at my peg to find plenty of colour in the water and bit of shelter from the cold north wind - it looked good for a few fish. I opted to set up a small feeder to fish into a gap in the reeds on the far side and a margin rig to fish at 12m up the left hand side. I also set up a rig to fish at depth 12m in front if all else failed. I called the all-in and cast my hair-rigged bread punch to the far side. It was intercepted almost immediately by a hungry 3lb carp, a good start, but although I continued to get liners I couldn't get a proper bite. After around an hour I decided to have a look at the margin. A few small fish soon snapped up my worm hook bait followed by a good carp. This seemed to have spooked the peg though and it was time for another go across. I cast out and decided to call Roy to see how his match was going. It was not looking good, with Rob on two carp and Roy just one small skimmer.

Andy Kind came to see me and must have brought me a bit of luck as the peg came back to life a bit with a few small buddy carp and the odd better one from across on the feeder and another look up the margin produced a couple more carp. Andy rang Roy again with around 1½ hours left and it was looking grim. Andy informed him that we had already stamped the medallion with an R and an O. The next hour went well for me and I had five good carp in as many casts and in the last ½ hour had another big fish from the margin. It was difficult to see the rest of the section but the word was it had been quite hard and three anglers had already taken an early bath.

As I walked up to weigh from peg 30 a few of the 26 anglers drawn on pool 1 were already on the way home - for those that had stuck at it a few late fish had paid dividends.

Wayne O’Beirne won the top section, with Master of Mallory Bob Eaton taking the middle section. My 12 carp were enough to get me back on track after last week with a win in the first section. By the time we had weighed my fish the news had reached us that the most improved angler at Mallory Park Fisheries, if not now the World, had added another name to his battering medallion, that of World Championship angler and venue owner Roy 'Robber' Marlow.

Back at the marquee it was time for Rob to present Roy with his medallion and pictures were taken for Rob's trophy cabinet, Rob added that there are a few more 'top' names yet to be added, watch this space!!! It must also be reported that Mr Ward suggested that Roy’s name must be stamped with some “very large” stamps, now that is nasty.

And finally, we had email at Mallory Park Fisheries threatening batterings all around after last week's report from at least one of Leicester's Pro Anglers, but alas none were present at the prize giving and we expect the phone lines to be quiet this week. It was also reported that one angler has resorted to foul play once again. This angler was witnessed on the far side of pool 5 with a large bait bucket, retrieving his snagged tackle. I was informed that this had not paid off as although he had sat between both the 2nd and 4th placed anglers he finished last in the section.
