Shane Fowler - winner off of pool 1
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
The weather was looking cruel for this week's match although a forecast of heavy rain and even some snow didn't deter the 40 anglers at the draw. There were quite a few insults being traded again at the draw and I'm sure that some of the members are now actually competing to win the coveted Nasty Trophy. This week I was up on pool 1 at the far end on peg 26 and the first job was to get the brolly up to shelter from the rain and biting cold wind. I was soon joined by Mr Ward, who had drawn next to me on peg 28 - he also erected his brolly. I would have to rely on his honesty to find out what he was catching.
I opted to start on the bread feeder tight across and straight away I was getting a few indications, but nothing developing into a bite. It was a similar start for most I could see peering over my brolly. With around an hour gone and not a fish in sight, Mr. Ward decided to go and find out what was happening along the lake. I decided to ring Roy to find out how the weather was catching them down on pool 7. It was very cold was his reply, but he added that he was okay as he was sat in his Volvo with the heating on. I asked 'did you decide not to fish?' but I should have known better as he was fishing the match from inside his car parked at the peg!!!
Mr Ward came back to inform me that only the early numbers had caught fish and everyone else was struggling for a bite. I decided to have a go on the pole and foul hooked a good fish straight away, unfortunately it came off shortly afterwards. We were then joined by Roy who had come for a ride up to help Mr Ward with his flask, but as he approached he alerted me to the fact that Dagga was actually trying to get a fish in under my radar. I sensed a bit of mischief though when Roy added that it was a monster of at least 14lb. Before returning to the warmth of his car Roy informed me that he had also managed to sneak in a carp without anyone seeing him get out of his car!!
My match didn't get a lot better, but I did manage a couple of 3lb carp across on the feeder late in the day. Mr Ward had fished a brilliant match catching fish from everywhere he put his bait, he had tried to sneak a few fish under radar but I had a good idea that he had won the section. As it turned out the early pegs on pool 1 had fished really well, considering the conditions, and Shane Fowler won the first section with a brilliant weight of 72lb from peg 4, fishing the lead with corn. Steve Conway came in second with a respectable 41lb on similar tactics.
Mr Ward did indeed win our section with 7 good carp for 28lb, there were no 14lb fish in his net though!! Dom Lanni came in second - after fishing the long pole most of the day he was rewarded with three good fish in the last hour. I actually managed to scrape in third with my two carp for 6lb.

Pool 4

Rob Hollis - 26lb - peg 69
Bob Eaton - 17lb - peg 71
Pool 5
Scott Brooks - 40lb - peg 84

Rob Clayton - 11lb - peg 85
Pool 6
Gordon Parker - 15lb - peg 94

Pool 7
Roy 'Rodney' Marlow - 36lb - peg 98
Dave Caulkin - 21lb 15oz - peg 106
John Palmer - 21lb - peg 103
Looking at the results there seems to have been some tough battles around the fishery with ounces deciding the places, and some good weights were put together. I have been informed that Scott Brooks was pressured into the win on pool 5. He wasn’t going to be the first one with a double Claytoning and a 'No. 2' next to his name on the medallion. I have also been asked to clarify that 'Rodney' is the name of Roy’s rod rest.
I am hoping that you are enjoying reading these reports from our 'friendly' matches and you can appreciate that it takes a little time for me to get them up on the website. So it was a shock for me today (Tuesday) to receive phone calls from two section winners asking why the report has not yet reached the website, each adding that the other had suggested it was because I had not performed well myself. I find this very hurtful and it will be reflected in my 'nasty' voting nomination.
Finally I must say a big thank you to the Leicester pro's for taking time out from weekly practice to do a bit of peg clearing, removing a fair bit of lost tackle from the early pegs on pool 1, well done.
This week I'm also reporting the top ten placings from the first group of five matches, and not just because I am in it!!! Here they are:
Max Higgott - 38 points
Wayne O’Beine - 37 points
Dan Hull - 37 points
Rob Bowser - 37 points
Gordon Parker - 37 points
Kev Russell - 36 points
Dom Lanni - 36 points
Bob Eaton - 36 points
Les Wright - 36 points
Andy Towers - 34 points
And finally I have received numerous complaints concerning Robber Marlow and his in-car performance in this match. Scott Brown has asked that the rules be checked to see if sitting in the car all day, doing several laps of the fishery and sneaking fish in was allowed. Looking into the rules it appears that the only thing you cannot do is fish a 'floating car'.
I also checked the rules about feeding your peg whilst pretending to unhook your feeder from the far bank as Mr Ward often does. Clearly Mr Ward is out of order, the reason being he battered me this week. I am very pleased for Mr Ward as his fishing results have been extremely bad, in fact disastrous and I have been very concerned about him. What he does not know is that both me and the man on peg 30 deliberately eased off so that he would look good for a change. Robber Marlow informed me that during the match he received a phone call from Leicester's Professional Angler Mr Porter - he wanted to tell everyone that he was doing well at Makins Winter League, now isn't it strange that we only hear from him when he does well?!
