Stu O'Donnell spies trouble on the far bank
Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
A forecast of extreme weather and a clash with other local winter leagues, combined with the strength of the beer in Loughborough and a few recent bad results had shortened our entry list to 29 anglers. It was very wet at 10.30pm for the start of the match and most had erected brollies to shelter from the brisk SW wind. Bob had drawn for me as usual and I was down on peg 96. This is at the 'wrong end' of pool 6, and with the wind blowing up to the little girl's peg 86, myself and Gordon Parker, on peg 94, were not very hopeful.
I had remembered that Andy Towers had caught a few good perch the previous week on my peg, so I set up a chopped worm rig to hopefully get me a perch if I couldn't catch anything else. I had opted to start on the bread feeder with hair- rigged punch and was amazed when after just a few minutes of the all-in my tip pulled round, a 4lb carp was very carefully played and landed. A good start. The first hour though was frustrating, with lots of line bites but no more fish. Gordon had foul hooked and lost a couple of fish as well, so we knew there were a few carp about. The second hour saw us both on the pole. Gordon had opted to fish around 11m, I was after a the perch at 6m and soon added 3 good perch around 1½lb plus a couple of bonus roach around 1lb. The rain had stopped by now and the wind was swinging around and soon became a very strong westerly which was now blowing hard down to our end of the lake. I decided to go back onto the feeder and was soon rewarded with three more good carp to add to my catch.
It was looking good with an hour to go as I hadn’t seen anyone catch much up the lake - Gordon had only caught a few small roach and had gone back onto the straight lead as the wind was now really bad. It was then that Gordon’s peg really came to life, regular feeding with the catty whilst fishing the pole had stacked up a shoal of carp and he had eight good carp in as many casts, I had to watch my advantage dwindle away, I did add two more carp but it wasn't enough. At the weigh-in Gordon had won easily, taking the section with 46lb. I was lucky enough to just beat Rich Bedder, on the little girls peg, thanks to my perch and roach that weighed in at 7lb. Rich also had specimen perch that went 3lb 4oz on the scales.
The weights around the fishery had been generally better than the past few weeks but there were a few mishaps around the lakes with a few pole sections suffering in the wind - Dom Lanni breaking a big bit of his tourney pro and 'honest' Jim Chessman also breaking a section of his tourney pro.
'From Hero To Zero' is the story of Mick Moore, who told everyone at the draw how he had battered everyone at a recent match at Holly Farm. Not only did he have a dismal performance in our match but he severely damaged his peg on pool 1 and partially fell in getting a wet leg in the process. Peg 25 'the diving board Peg' is in need of repair, we do know that Mick will be on hand to repair it.
Mr Ward has received several official complaints for damaging far bank foliage and feeding his swim while pretending to clear snags. Sunday was no exception and apparently Mr Ward spent so much time on the other side of the pool that rumours are rife that he is taking up rambling instead of fishing!! Stu O'Donnell said 'almost every week Mr Ward is on the bank opposite his peg pretending to clear a snag out of his peg, obviously he puts it there himself, then pretends to clear it out at the same time baiting his swim'. It must be true as Stu would not make something up like that would he? Stu though was very pleased as the disturbance had moved all the carp into his peg. Biggest fish of the day fell to Trev Slater, a 19lb carp from pool 5. Top weight on the day again went to Max Higgott on peg 4, with 84lb of carp on the lead with corn.

And finally, some more snide rumours…
When the phone rang at 5.30am, with a call from Leicester's Professional angler, who had been fishing at Makins, it was obvious that he had done well. He told us how he had yet again easily won the lake and that Pete Wooton of Oadby Angling fame had been battered both sides (chip shopped) and that with nothing to trouble the scales it was a disgraceful performance, now that is hurtful. Remember Nasty Andy Kind? He was on the phone to Mr Ward early in the match complaining that he had heard that he was joint first in the Nasty Awards. How could that be? He has not fished with us for two months, he chimed. Apart from that his wife thinks everyone who voted for him is very hurtful and cannot understand why and wants to know who should be so unkind to “cuddly and nice” Andy. Mr and Mrs Kind are demanding to see who voted against him. When we have a new ink cartridge we will print the list and send it. All we can say is that an alias under the name of Ron Drunken gave Andy top marks!!
One of our match members, who to save embarrassment cannot be mentioned for legal reasons, in an effort to protect the possible innocent, has put in a serious complaint to the match committee. This member, who has a name similar to Poor Beggar, would like to make a statement to prevent hurtful and untrue comments that originate from the customers at Match Catch 'I would like to make it clear that I do not always draw a brilliant peg in fishing matches. Many colleagues believe that I have never drawn a bad peg, that is totally untrue and I have a record of one such case in my 2002 diary'. He has asked the committee to point out that the peg he drew on Sunday is not really a very good peg. It was peg 86 on pool 6, commonly known as the little girl's peg, say no more.
Just to finish, Mr Ward was quick to give an account for the whereabouts of Mr Brown, saying that he had heard his girlfriend shouting for him to get out of bed all day. Hurtful.
