Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:
Firstly may I wish everyone the very best for 2008. I apologise for the lack of reports at the end of 2007 so I hope this will update to the present regarding the winter league.
Cold weather at the end of 2007 delayed the last match of our second group of winter league fixtures, this was due to the ice on most of the lakes. The brave and perhaps foolhardy among us did still venture out on the two Sundays when ice breakers were needed and we had a few surprises. Firstly a tremendous catch by Lichfield angler Bob Conway from a frozen lake 7, taking an all carp catch of 61lb. There was also a near 4lb perch caught by 2007 Premier Fisheries Champion Jeff Reast from Nottingham. The other big surprise was that our most improved angler, Rob Clayton, finally won his first section in one of our matches. Not only did he win but he was the only angler in the section to catch a fish on a very hard day, skilfully detecting the shyest of bites, Rob hooked and landed a bonus bream of around 1½lbs to annihilate the opposition - well done Rob.
Finally a pleasant day on the Sunday before Christmas gave us the chance to fish the postponed match. A unanimous decision at the draw was to use this match for points rather than dropping the match.
Bob had drawn me a good peg this week, peg 3 on Pool 1. The lake was beginning to drop for the planned netting operations and was probably 1 foot down on its usual level, but still looked good for a few fish. It turned out to be a very hard match with the carp hard to come by, even the small fish we were hoping to net out were very hard to catch, and there were even suggestions that there weren't really that many fish in the lake!!!
I had a fish for fish battle with Dave Ringo on peg 11 , both of us catching around 5lb of really small skimmers and a couple of bonus carp, but I had a lucky cast right at the end to land a late carp and win the section.
Stu O'Donnell took the honours at the other end of the lake but was pushed, if not petrified, all the way by in-form angler, Rob 'the eel' Clayton who came in second.
Down on pool 4, Kerry Dyson took the win with a good catch of carp for 35lb. Pool 5 was won by Tony Woodings with a similar catch weighing 32lb.
Jeff Reast made no mistakes on the little girl's peg 86, which hasn't had the form of recent years, to take 29lb to the scales and give him the win in pool 6. Pool 7 was won by Albert Bray with 21lb, with Chris Needham pushing Dom Lanni into third place with a 9lb carp on the pole in the dying minutes of the match.

And finally it has been suggested that we will soon need a list on the web site of Rob 'the eels' conquests as the medallion is becoming very full, with him adding another two names this week - it will have to be looked at. It is also clear that although professional anglers and TV personalities practice much more than mere club angler they can be absolutely battered from the next peg. Also it is possible to spend all day cleaning your car out during a match and still pop over to your rod in the last minutes of the match and get in the money.
