exit from archiveMatch report provided by Kev Russell:
This Sunday's match was not a winter league fixture and a frosty morning had caught a few of us out, including me, after a few nice days I didn't expect almost all of the Glebe to be frozen over once again.

Rich Wells with a great catch of buddies
It took a while to get everyone in the mood for fishing, some of the aces, with much to loose, needed really persuading. Mr Ward was quick to point out that it couldn't be any worse than the previous week for one particular ace, or could it? My drawing hand, Bob Eaton, had decided to have a go, as it was a year to the day that he had given us all a fright up on pool 1, he didn't do me any favours though as he pulled me out my nemesis, peg 92 down on pool 6.
As I got to my peg I wasn't surprised to see all the superstars also on my lake, to my left I had Stu O’Donnell on the little girl's peg, Gordon Parker beside him, Tony Woodings and Chris Downs, and to my right Carl Redman, Ringo and Richard Wells. Richard, I must admit was still in the car park and not looking forward to peg 96 as it had been very hard throughout the winter, he finally succumbed and joined the rest of us in the ice breaking ritual.
My gamble today was to fish quite short at 6m for a few perch and hopefully a skimmer or two and perhaps a couple of the new buddies we had put in. Hopefully then, as the day warmed up a bit, the ice would clear and we would be able to catch on the lead. Soon after the all-in there was a surprise in that Richard and Ringo were straight into a run of small carp, which carried on throughout the first hour. My perch were hard to come by but I did manage three for around a pound, but by this time Carl had also caught a few buddies as well. My match wasn't looking good, I decided to break the ice a bit further out but still I couldn't get a bite, my only consolation at this point was that Chris, on the next peg, still handn't caught a fish.
Throughout the match the ice had been slowly melting and with around an hour to go Chris had managed to break his way across the lake with an ice breaking pole longer than my match pole!!! He quickly cast across and was soon rewarded with a 3lb carp. The ensuing commotion soon alerted Roy on pool 7 who I'm glad got up to watch and witness the goings on in the final ¾ hour. Roy had been very kind to me throughout the match even offering to help me break the ice across to the far bank, but I had turned down his offer and was resigned to the fact that I could be last. A stroke of luck in the last half hour - the swan, that had been paddling around breaking the ice in the first few pegs, had finally come up and freed up bit of lake to cast my bomb. I cast out and it had only been in a few minutes when the tip pulled around, I had a decent fish on. What followed was witnessed by Roy and several other anglers. Chris leapt from his box and in seconds was behind me and coaxing me NOT to lose the fish. I played it carefully, but alas it was only a skimmer of around a pound, much to Chris's delight I was still in last position. I cast back out and was taking a fair bit of torture from Chris, who was still on my shoulder casting a very large shadow, when, in the dying minutes, my tip arced round once more, and this time it was a proper fish. I was really concentrating on getting this fish out on quite light tackle, but I was told by Roy and Steve that Chris was almost bringing down the aeroplanes and helicopters behind me. The 5lb fish was safely netted and I was saved from last position and weighed in a total of 7lb - 13oz, I didn't win anything but was not afraid to weigh in. Unlike someone very close.
Richard had a terrific match taking 53lb of small carp and a good win on pool 6. It just goes to show angling really is good fun.
On to the results:
Pool 1
Chris Allen - 18lb - peg 12

Nasty Steve Conway - 9lb - peg 105
You will note that I have copied the names in section 7 as they were written on the weigh sheet by Chris Downs!!!
And finally it has been brought to the attention of the committee that several members have been extremely hurtful to other nice members by using very nasty and uncalled-for language that has caused deep and lasting upset to them. As you know we do not print anything in this column unless it can be verified to be honest and truthful, with that being the case we have to use alias names sometimes to protect the innocent.
The first case involved Steve Conway who up until last week had been considered by some to be a very nice person. He had sat next to Robber Marlow the week before and had a good day coming a very respectful second on the lake. Nice person as he is, Robber congratulated him. Last week the pair drew side by side again and it was Robber's turn to catch a few fish. Everyone knows that Roy never upsets anyone, yet he was subjected to verbal and emotional abuse all day from Steve. This deeply upset Roy who is a very sensitive person and his complaint will be scrutinised by the committee.

ACE with nothing to weigh!
Pool 6 was like a who's who of Superstars last Sunday, so much so that the Sky Sports helicopter was hovering around. We understand that he was looking for one of our most famous anglers nationally known as ACE. (We cannot use is real name which sounds like Chris Downs). Unfortunately ACE was again last on the lake, this was for the second week running and it was not taken very well. It was noticed that ACE was given lots of verbal support from Roy but it was to no avail. The final nail was driven in by Ruthless Russelli who I understand skilfully caught a carp in the closing minutes to devastate our superstar.
Chris Downs has some good mates who tried very hard to console him; one mate is Chris Allen, his travelling companion. We were reliably informed that Chris Allen has invested in some earplugs and a box of Kleenex. The earplugs will prevent Chris Allen from having to use the Kleenex. He said, 'there are only so many hard luck stories you can hear, after that they become boring', now that is hurtful.
Anyway other mates were not so hurtful. Only three days after the dreadful match, Over Practice Bob Eaton, fished the same peg in similar conditions just to prove how bad a draw it was. In the words of Bob Eaton it was hard having only caught 14 large carp on the lead and several Buddies that kept pulling his tip round, he decided to fish the pole, again he was pestered by Buddies and big skimmers. When asked for a comment Bob said, 'Ace is my mate and it is not his fault he is crap at the moment, I am confident he will bounce back as he is big enough'. Now that is hurtful, does it mean he is big as in a name or big in stature? Anyway he has paid his subs so he will not keep throwing his teddy out of the pram.
Robber Marlow has asked that all members tell the truth about what is being caught. Unfortunately again because of misinformation several anglers threw their fish back and threw away some coin as they had enough to frame.
Mr Ward needs to be reprimanded; without doubt he is one of the most hurtful members. It could deeply upset fellow anglers if we printed what he has said about Nice Scott Brown and Ace. This kind of talk could cost us members.
It was noted that Nasty Kind turned up on Sunday with a massive First-Aid box for the fishery. This is greatly appreciated and in future any one who slags Andy will have to be reprimanded. The other Andy, from Match Catch fishing tackle, has not fished for about a month. Mr Ward believes he has a bird on. This cannot be verified so it should be ignored.
Russelli.
