exit from archiveMatch report provided by Kev Russell:
This week's match was not a winter league fixture and so our most improved angler was away recharging his batteries ready to give out some more sorrow next week, we struggled through the draw without his usual organised help. Mr Ward managed to find the oldest bit of parchment to scribble down the names, most of which by now are unrepeatable pseudonyms, even for the nicest of our anglers. We put this down to him spending a lot of time on his own shouting and falling out with very old pieces of grass cutting equipment.
Thirty four anglers were spread over pools 1, 4, 5, 6 & 7, with each having a spare peg on one side at least. One angler down on pool 6 even managed to draw the same peg as last week with three empty pegs to his right. I drew an area with no form whatsoever, peg 67 on pool 4 - in fact two of our top anglers had both failed from it in the previous weeks.
With a strong wind blowing up to my end of the lake I decided not to take out my pole and just concentrate on the straight lead. After around an hour's fishing it was clearly evident that any carp that were at my end of the lake, if any, weren't in a feeding mood. Around half-way through the match both myself and Kerry Dyson at the next peg had both caught a carp each, both around 10lb in weight. Honest Jim was still hoping for a bite, but out in front were Dave Caulkin on four carp and Max Higgott at the far end on three.

The last hour turned out to be a bit tense, as there were three of us with a very similar weight, as by now Jim had also snared a good sized carp. I stuck to my plan and was rewarded with seven 1lb skimmers, all on hair rigged bread punch. It turned out to be good enough for third place, with Dave Caulkin taking top spot with six carp for 49lb, the largest of his fish weighing just under 18lb.
Gordon Parker took another good win from the unfancied end of pool 5 with seven carp for 49lb.
Pool 1 fished much better this week and the levels are almost back to normal after the netting, the early pegs throwing up good catches of the new stock fish. Stu O’Donnell, who has now practised his way into an end peg most weeks, made no mistake from peg 2 taking 60lb to the scales. Domonic Lanni again won the middle section taking 42lb, this made Mr Ward quite unwell on the next peg. Our youngest superstar, Jarrad Smith, managed to catch almost four times as much as some of the pro's in his section to take the win on the last section.
Down on the bottom lakes there were some great catches. Albert Bray took top weight of the day from peg 101 on pool 7 with a carp catch of 75lb. Dave Ringo at the next peg also doing well with 57lb. On pool 6, 'Angling Legend' Bob Eaton took a great catch of buddy carp from the far end of the lake on peg 96, weighing 33lb to win the lake.

And finally, the committee has been put under even more pressure to make sure that what is written in this column is true and not exaggerated. It turns out that some of the recent comments were not quite accurate, especially the latest ones from Bob Eaton and Chris Allen that mentioned our ACE angler Chris Downs. We have been asked to point out that because of the inaccuracies ACE angler Chris Downs was very upset and the committee apologises for any upsets. We have had to say that because we do not want to lose a member. We have constantly said that ACE is a brilliant angler just drawing badly, this is a different story from what his mates are saying. For fear of upsetting our man even more the comments will not be printed. (By the way, we've found a new picture of ACE from last week's match - you can see it near the end of last week's report here).

Anyway, back to this week, poor old ACE decided to have the last peg in the hat, guess what, it was the same peg on pool 6 as the week before. The good news is that ACE did not come last in this section this week, he was saved by Big Trev who chucked back at the next peg. We don't know at this stage if he was talked into it!!! The committee congratulated ACE on a brilliant performance from a pressure peg and decided to give him Man of The Match award for determination and effort. However it did not last long as Pete Wootton a few pegs further along received the award for his performance. The committee is working on a new award as ACE has already dozens of 'Man of the Match' awards anyway.
This week we had another ACE angler in the form of Leicester's Professional Angler Steve Porter joining us for some easy coin. Well we did have at the draw, after that things went a little quiet. Drawn on fancied peg 28 on pool 1 we were all expecting big weights from our pro. It turns out he was battered big time by our youngest angler, Jarrad, at the next peg. Steve was not available for a comment but Jarrad said 'it was like having an empty peg next to me, Steve had all the gear but no idea', now that is a little hurtful.
We all know that Mr Ward is the instigator of all the hurtful comments that are included in the And Finally column. It must have been pay back time this week; Mr Ward had to be counselled by Robber Marlow several times during the match. In fact at one time the lifebelt and stretcher from the new First-Aid box had to be put on standby. A dreadful result from our specialist winter angler. Asked for a comment Mr Ward said:
'I will get you all back for this' - what does he mean?
We mentioned last week Steve Conway who had been hurtful to Robber Marlow. It appears that he was very hurtful to Scott Brown on Sunday. Scott is a very nice man so has Steve Conway got a secret nasty streak that we do not know about? He will have to be monitored. Anyway we will need someone new to write about, as there is only so much an angler can take before he finally throws his teddy out of the pram. Steve Conway could be our new man, any information about him that is obviously true and can be verified will be considered for printing.
