Sunday 20th January 2008

Winter league report provided by Kev Russell:

This Sunday saw us back doing battle for the Glebe winter league trophy and the attendance was good with 44 anglers at the draw. Reports had been good from those who had fished throughout the week and with milder temperatures than of late we were hoping for some good fishing. Bob had drawn me in the section that had fished well the week before, peg 5 on pool 1.

When I got to my peg I realised it was going to be hard, very hard to score good points. My section was full of all the recent section winners and superstars, also I had drawn next to ACE. To my other side young Jarrad was threatening to get his own back for the last time we sat together. To cut the story short I was in the middle of a section where to my right they bagged on the big carp and to my left the buddies were biting well, I just didn't know whether to stick it out for the better carp or try and catch as many buddies as I could. I ended up second to last in a very tough section. Rob Bowser fended off some severe ribbing, sat between 'ACE' Chris Downs and Burton’s best drawer Chris Allen, but came out on top with around 18 good carp for 75lb. Chris Allen was just behind again with a good catch of carp weighing 68lb. ACE had a few more buddies in his catch and came in third with 54lb. Man of the match must have been Gary Sadler on peg 1 who caught around 80 buddies to weigh just 2oz short of third place. I had had a good day weighing 40lb with lots of bites and managed to keep the young lad from giving me an embryoing.

The second section saw Chris Needham take an impressive win, catching 58lb of fish from an unfancied peg 18 - the rumour was that if he didn't take home some coin his good lady was going to ground him!!. Angling legend Bob Eaton was second and Mick 'python' Moore came in third. Mick asked that I mention that he is quite a superstar now and is running in second place in the Mill On The Soar winter league, keep it up Mick. Gary Miller took top spot in the difficult section at the far end, taking 29lb to the scales. Rob Harper came in second with John Palmer in third.

Down on pool 4 it was quite a close match - Rich Bedder took top spot from a really good draw on peg 72, taking 43lb of carp, if any of his team mates for the forthcoming winter league are reading it has been suggested that Rich is allowed to draw for the team!! Shane Fowler was second with his travelling partner Dave 'the method' Hough in third.

Carl Redman had the day's top catch from pool 5, his carp weighing in at 85lb. It must be noted that Mr Ward came second with 25lb. I have had phone calls since Monday asking when the report will be up for the world to see. It was actually reported to me that Mr Ward had been quite hurtful suggesting that because I had not done very well, and he had done brilliant, the report would be late going public, very hurtful!! Our league leader, Gordon Parker, made no mistakes on peg 86, winning the section convincingly and strengthening his position - he had 62lb of pole caught carp of all sizes from 5oz up to 7lb.

Pool 7 was probably the tightest section with 6 anglers split by only 10lb. Dave Hunter came out on top with 56lb, Roy was a close second from unfancied peg 108 and Steve Conway was third.

Here are the section top places:

Pool 1
Section 1
Rob Bowser - 75lb - peg 8
Chris Allen - 68lb - peg 10
Chris Downs - 54lb - peg 7

Section 2
Chris Needham - 58lb - peg 18
Bob Eaton - 48lb - peg 13
Mick Moore - 40lbs - peg 12

Section 3
Gary Miller - 29lb - peg 27
Rob Harper - 12lb - peg 22
John Palmer - 10lb - peg 25

Pool 4
Rich Bedder - 43lb - peg 72
Shane Fowler - 34lb - peg 71
Dave Hough - 21lb - peg 69

Pool 5
Carl Redman - 85lb - peg 84
David 'dagga' Ward - 25lb - peg 81
Stu Johnson - 24lb - peg 83

Pool 6
Gordon Parker - 65lb - peg 86
Paul Bates - 25lb - peg 88
Gordon Priddey - 19lb - peg 91

Pool 7
Dave Hunter - 56lb - peg 104
Roy Marlow - 51lb - peg 108
Steve Conway - 45lb - peg 102

And finally the committee is committed to only writing what can be accurately verified in this write up. The threat of legal action from certain people if we print misleading or slightly untrue versions of a story is a serious concern. That is why sometimes an alias name is used to protect the innocent.

Chris Needham - first on section 2 of pool 1

Chris Needham - first on section 2 of pool 1

This week we have not a lot to report. 'Robber' Marlow was at the far end of pool 7, hiding behind is brolly, with no one to speak to (torment). The only report from the lower pools concerned certain members who lied about their weights. It turned out that the only honest people in those sections were Robber and Steve Conway. The dishonest ones were lead by Albert 'Bronc' Bray and Gordon Parker, who could not lie straight in bed.

At the draw our ACE angler Chris Downs had a smile on his face when he drew peg 7. He was out for blood and as we all know if he gets a good draw it is all over. ACE did well, but not well enough, our dark horse Rob Bowser battered both ACE and Chris Allen with an epic performance. There were many very hurtful things said about ACE again by his mates. It should be noted that Ringo drew the same pegs on pool 6 that had caused ACE to throw a couple of wobblies. Ringo has asked that we point out that he was not last or even last but one in this section. Ringo said 'there is obviously always plenty of fish on these pegs, but sometimes you have to be a little smarter to catch them'.

Over Practice Bob Eaton has been extremely hurtful to Ace. The committee is very sensitive when it comes to possibly upsetting people. With that in mind they have decided in the interest of not being hurtful to ACE not to print what was said. It was noted that ACE had a flat tyre passenger side on Sunday. Chris Allen his travelling companion said 'we were lucky it was on my side, if it had happened on ACE's side we would have finished up in the ditch on the opposite side of the road'. The committee did not understand this but when pressed on this statement Chris Allen said it was all down to the Pork Pies. We still do not understand, perhaps someone could enlighten us on this subject. In fact the words Pork and Pie were mentioned an awful lot on pool 1 throughout the match.

You really know when you have made the big time when you get a mention in our report without even fishing our match, so on to Leicester’s Professional Angler, Mr SPorter, who you recall got embryoed last week by young Jarrad. We have been asked to point out that there is a contract out on Jarrad. Now that is a little hurtful. Mr Porter’s good run continued this week at the local canal match. We heard on very good authority from a reliable Oadby tackle dealer whom we cannot mention that L.P.A. was doubled on one side and 8 times on the other. This was denied naturally. We knew it must have been a bad performance because the phone lines were not busy on Sunday night.

Mr Ward was a lot happier on Sunday because he came second on his lake. The rest of the committee could not understand what he meant when he said that side-by-side Scot Brown and Chris Downs looked like peg 88!!

Stu O'Donnell drew a peg on Sunday that he had not practiced on, now that is unusual. It is now a spin up between 'over practice' Bob Eaton and S.O.D as to who should be paying council tax at the fishery.

We have reliable found out that Andy Towers, who has not fished with us for several Sundays, has not got a bird on as was said by Mr Ward. Please totally ignore this statement.

Stop Press:

The following has been verified by contacts whose identity must remain secret to protect them. An Oadby tackle dealer and a sex shop owner have reliably informed us that Mr Porter is very upset regarding details concerning his performance on Sunday. Mr Porter claims he came mid way in his section; well unless there was only four in his section that could be close to the truth. We were informed that he came last but one. Sounds like a Chris Downs story to us. We all know that if you are Leicester’s Professional Angler then no expense can be spared to ensure success in these high stake high profile fishing events. It has emerged from our alias informants that L.P.A. has a personnel float and rig builder. It turns out that different pole rigs have been specially made for every peg on the canal. When L.P.A goes to his peg he has a box of winders prepared with the peg number on the boxed set ready for instant use. The question has to be asked, how can he ever be beat? Last Sunday the rigs paid off, in the net were 5 roach, mainly small for a total of 2oz. Robber Marlow desperately needs some pole rigs as he as only 3 rigs in his box. Possibly L.P.A may have a few dozen to spare.

And finally finally, Mr Ward would like to again point out that for some strange reason that this report from Mr Russelli is always late in the week when he has a poor performance, now that is again very hurtful.

Russelli.
