exit from archiveWinter league report provided by Kev Russell:
Sunday saw the return of better weather and also a few members that have been absent for a while. Rob Clayton had been away, trying his hand at sea fishing. Although Rob is a real trier and not one for giving up, he confessed that it had beat him and he had failed to catch even a sprat. Mr Kind was back and at the front of the queue for the draw, nothing changed there very much, and he did pull out the little girl's peg. This didn't surprise anyone either. Matt Hall was back after a winter break, apparently his brother, John, had told him how easy it was to still get in the money. There was also a return from the canal scene of Steve Porter. I'm sure the regular readers will know how well he has done at that.
The final count at the draw was 46 anglers for this the first match in our final group of five matches. Things were tight at the top of the league going into this match, with the top ten as follows:
Dom Lanni
Gord Parker
Kev Russell
Bob Eaton
Chris Hall
Steve Conway
Jarrad Smith
Kerry Dyson
Ian Saiger
Carl Redman

Carl Redman with a top catch of silvers from peg 22
On to the draw and my drawing hand Bob had drawn me out peg 2. This was a good draw but so were all the other pegs in this section. The section was going to be difficult. Albert 'Bronk' Bray had drawn peg 1, he was definitely in touch with the venue, apparently practising on at least 3 pegs in one day earlier in the week!!! League leader Dom Lanni was on peg 4, John 'the spod' Duncan on peg 5, and Chris Needham on peg 7, just out of the usual hot peg were Mick Moore on 8 and Ringo was sitting on peg 10, apparently he could have left his kit over night as he had sat there all day Saturday!! I called the all-in and had a fish on as soon as my bread feeder hit the water. It was soon evident that there were a few fish being caught, with a running commentary from Mr Scott Brown on peg 13 making it clear that most in the section were catching a few fish.
I was flying though and for the first couple of hours was clearly in front. Unfortunately though it was a case of the hare and the tortoise, as my fish got fewer and fewer while the others caught up, I finished up with an excellent catch of 22 carp. Dom was admitting to 21, John had 18, and Chris had 20. Bronk was still claiming to be last in the section with a dozen carp, but I had seen him catch 18!!! It was going to be awfully close at the weigh in. We weighed in as usual from the other end, 'ACE' Chris Downs cleaned up at that end on peg 28 with a net of bread and lead caught carp, putting 57lb on the scales. Paul Gardener was just behind catching carp and big skimmers close in on the pole and Carl Redman put a brilliant net of silver fish together on the pellet off the deck at 5 meters. Matt Hall made an excellent comeback taking 98lb of carp on the feeder and maggot from peg 18. Mr Psorter was also on a good comeback with a brilliant canal weight of 40lb from peg 12, at the next peg. Scott Brown took a well earned third position on tackle that he managed to get together after 'SCUM' had Robbed off all his tackle on Friday whilst he was out earning a living. If anyone hears of any suspicious tackle for sale in the area please get in touch.

Matt Hall - section 2 winner
The big weights in our section started with Chris Needham, just beating John Duncan with 79lb to John's 77lb. Dom took the win with 106lb of bread caught carp. I then put 91lb on the scales, but all, except me, had ruled out Bronk with his 12 carp. He put 91lb 4oz on the scales for second and he was also awarded the honour of being the most dishonest angler on the bank, as everyone else was pretty close with their estimates.
On pool 4, in form angler Rob Harper took the win from the middle of the section with 80lb of carp. Ian Saiger was in second from unfancied peg 67 and Dave Hunter was third from the opposite end. Steve Conway was again a winner on pool 5, taking 68lb to the scales. Brian Hill came in second with 61lb, with 'angling legend' Bob Eaton in third. Down on pool 6, Andy Kind had allegedly chuntered his way to an impressive win with 90lb from the little girl's peg 86, he was complaining of many snags in the peg but he is apparently going to spend a few days of his forthcoming holiday clearing out this peg as he will surely be drawing it quite often now he is back with us. Stu O'Donnell did well getting second from the unfancied end. He claimed it was fear of getting an embryoing from Young Jarrad who was at the next peg, coming in just behind in third. Pool 7 was convincingly won by John Hall, almost doubling everyone else with 93lb from peg 99. Rich Wells came in second with 'honest' Jim Chessman in third.

Steve Porter with his comeback catch
And finally it was noted by other members of the committee that although Mr Ward had presented the Nasty Trophy to Mr Kind, saying that he was only looking after it until he came back, it was Mr Ward who was very very hurtful to Scott. Scott was explaining sadly of his tackle theft and saying how they had not stolen his perfectly conditioned bicycle when Mr Ward added 'they must know you Scott'. Scott asked why to which Mr Ward replied ould you want a bike that had been ridden by a *** stone man', very hurtful!!
Scott had received some kind offers of tackle to get him by, but again Mr Ward chipped in offering him a breeze block to sit on, Mr Ward added that he could keep his pies in one side and his pasties and sausage rolls in the other!!! Whilst on the subject Mr Ward warned there may be an influx of twitchers at the fishery - apparently last week there were reports of a pair of lesser spotted pie catchers on pools 6 & 7 and hopes were that they were going to get together for the spring.
On the subject of birds it was noted that the black fish eating birds were getting very brave in Robber's absence. Rob Clayton had scared off eight from the bottom pools on Sunday morning, this is strange really as you would think he would feel some sort of pity for them, both being unable to catch fish at sea!!
And finally, finally, if you see a big silver German car with a really flash private number plate, something like PSORTER, parked up, don't hang around as it needs around ten men to get it started with a push.
