exit from archiveWinter league report provided by Kev Russell:

Bill Pryce - winner on pool 6
Although almost half of Sunday's 44 anglers had actually practised on the Saturday it was difficult to find out how the Glebe had fished, most were keeping very tight lipped. There were even reports of some anglers getting quite upset by the fact that our fishery owner was trying to get an idea of the lakes' form, having been away for a month. At the draw Mr Ward was happy that his pal Andy Kind was back. It had become a ritual for Andy to bring along a little present each week, this week Mr Ward was particularly pleased with his gift!! I’m sorry but it is difficult to explain the details on this website. The draw was actually cocked up a bit this week as regulars 'honest' Jim and 'embryo' Jarrad had spent so long in the car park discussing tactics that they were late for the draw. A quick decision was made to put all the pegs in the first section into the bag to make up the peg numbers, this had been a good area recently and most were looking to draw on these pegs.
This week I was back down on the far end of pool 6. It had fished well the previous week and I was hopeful of a few fish. I had a word with Stu O'Donnell who had fished the peg last week and he kindly gave me a few pointers.
Pretty soon after the all-in it was evident that there were again a few fish at the other end of our lake. Bill Pryce was on the little girl's peg and was soon catching a few fish. I had started on the bread feeder and punched bread, tight across, and had a few fish quite early on. I was receiving a fair bit of banter from Scott Brown at the next peg, but we were having some fun. Scott actually soon caught up with me, he had cast into the trees opposite and had begged 'kind' Richard Wells, on pool 7, to untangle his rig. After this Scott had cast up the lake into the corner, being afraid of a repeat performance, and his tip pulled round straight away and an 8lb carp was soon in his net.

Dave Hough - second on pool 7
After six carp the bread had lost its appeal and it was time for plan B - three maggots on a small hook and a small feeder with green swimstim, thanks Stu. This got the fish going again and I finished up with around 15 carp at the end. Scott had managed to catch a few more fish, most during sessions of prolonged texting. He had even had to break off an very important phone call to land a fish, it must have been very important as he had been on the phone for ages.
At the weigh in, Bill Pryce had done the business on peg 86 with 71lb of carp fishing a 14 mtr pole along the margin. Rob Bowser was second from peg 89 with 64lb of carp caught on the feeder with bread and a couple on the waggler with corn. I was happy to put 51lb on the scales for third.
Pool 7 had fished a bit harder than previous weeks and the fancied pegs hadn't thrown up. Some of the anglers had already gone for an early bath before the scales arrived. The result was very tight with Trev Slater taking first place just ahead of Dave 'the method' Hough, just behind him Rich Wells, he got the prize for being most dishonest as well as being third.
Regular Saturday angler Dave Ringo did the job on pool 4, taking 68lb to the scales. John 'the spod' Duncan kept up his good form in second place, and 'honest' Jim's tactic talk with Jarrad helped him into third spot. The BIG talking point on this lake though was that ACE Chris Downs had come last in the section, and had failed to congratulate our 'most improved angler' Rob Clayton on his solid performance in fourth place, just ounces behind Jim. Well done Rob.
Pool 5 was won on peg 84 by Dynamite angler Rich Nicholls who had a great catch of carp weighing 70lb, all taken on a pellet feeder with sinking expander hook bait. 'Angling legend' Bob Eaton was second from the next peg, with Dave Colkin in third from peg 79.

Rich Nicholls - winner on pool 5
Up on pool 1 there were many tales of lost fish, rumour has it that there are so many fish there that when you hook one they all get together and it's a bit like tug of war - they all help to pull back. Carl Redman lost enough fish on peg 1 to have won the match 3 times over but came last in the section!! League front runner, Dom Lanni, came out tops in the first section once again, even having lost lots of fish he managed to weigh in a fine 70lb. His secret is out though, he is putting his success down to his purchase of an ABU Suveran rod 'it just pulls around where ever I sit' he said. At the next peg Roy was back from his holidays and even after he had failed to get any info from ACE on Saturday he managed to sneak into second place. 'Soon to be wed' Paul Bates is still trying hard to add to the wedding fund and came in third place.
Matt Hall was thanking brother John for getting him back to the Glebe, and had another fine win in the second section from peg 15. New member Neil Russell was second and O.A.P. 'likely lad' Brian Envis was third. Gary Miller took a fine 60lb to the scales to win the third section, with Paul Taylor in second and Rob Harper in third. The final section was won by Jarrad Smith, he commented 'having AK at the next peg was like having one empty', now that is verging on being nasty. Tony Woodings came in second and Mr Ward was in third.
Here are the places with the weights and peg numbers, if you are planning a session on the hot pegs in the week, please arrive early because there will be much more practising as the league draws to a climax.

And finally Stu O'Donnell kindly informed us that this week is national pie eating week. Mr Ward had already had already got his team together for the Melton Mowbray cup, but apparently new member Neil Russell claims he can eat ACE under the table, a brave statement, he looks set to get a place in the team. Scott was training well on Sunday, it started with sausage rolls followed by soup and a few rounds of bread followed by numerous Double Deckers and finally a sausage roll dipped in the remains of the soup!!! P.S. I mustn't mention the Donkey.

Trev Slater - winner on pool 7
The recent earthquakes epicentre was apparently misreported to have been in Lincolnshire, we now know it was actually in Newbold Verdon. Remember John Hall, who had talked his brother back to the Glebe as it was so easy to win. He was reported to the committee for swearing loudly at Mr Ward, and also stated that he is now taking up golf!! Only a few weeks ago John commented to his mates that if you needed some cash just take it off the Glebe Match members, easy money!!! John was devastated on Sunday having been thrashed by Mr Ward on the next peg. The important word here is ability said Mr Ward. "I have proved yet again that superior tackle does not mean a lot. Just imagine what John would have caught if he had to use my kit."
The phone lines were hot from Leicester's Professional Angler who reported that he was deeply upset about comments from his mates regarding his canal performances. We cannot understand why, they just said he was crap. You know he has done well if he phones in but again we have to check out the stories. Leicester's Professional Angler Mr Sporter informed us that he did brilliantly on Sunday, in an away match, by catching 6lb of roach. he did mention that the angler next to him had 46lb of bream, but that was irrelevant as 6lb of roach was a much better catch. What he failed to mention was that he was chip shopped. The angler on his other side also battered him, makes you wonder how many fish were in his swim (that’s what Pete Wooton said).
We may have a new contender for next year's Mallory Nasty Trophy. Young Jarrad continued on his run of battering people on the next peg again on Sunday. He is doing so well we ask him for an interview to explain his success.
Jarrad said, “I have taken a leaf out of my friend and travelling companion Honest Jim Chessman's book. He told me to just try hard and be nice to people and I would become a good angler. Obviously drawing well helps but over the last few weeks I have drawn next to some right muppets. When I drew next to Leicester's Pro Mr Sporter I knew I could beat him because he was constantly being dazzled with all of his new expensive shiny tackle. This week was easy; it was like having two empty pegs to my left with Nasty Kind being on one of them. He has been resting these last few months, although I reckon he must have been still resting on Sunday. You have to try very hard to only catch a couple of small carp on Glebe pool 1 and Andy did just that. It is easy to go from Hero to Zero in this game, Andy won off the little girl's peg last week, but to be fare it wins most times anyway. What can I say?"
I will end this report here as Jarrad would like the report to be up for the world to see early on Tuesday morning.
