exit from archiveWinter league report provided by Kev Russell:
Sunday had dawned a very cold and blustery day, the wind was coming from the northeast and this is not a kind wind on the Glebe.

Andy Kind with a fine net of skimmers
The draw was full of insults as usual, Mr Ward was worried for young Jarrad. He was standing next to Scott Brown, Scott was either having a late breakfast or still finishing the ‘Doggy Bag’ from the previous night’s festivities, apparently there had been quite a party to celebrate ‘soon to be wed’ Paul Bates’ engagement. Dagga was worried that young Jarrad would get bitten or even eaten!! 42 pegs went into the draw bag and this week I ended up on peg 13, unlucky for some, I thought. The same section as last week and last week’s section winner, Neil Russell, was again at the end of the section, on peg 18. I had John ‘the spod’ to my right and Rich Bedder on my left.
The wind was really blowing cold and strong into the early pegs and Roy, on peg 8, had tried and failed to erect his brolly. At the all-in most of the first section, pegs 1 -8, had fish almost straight away but the cold wind was making it difficult to cast tight across to the far bank reeds, where the fish wanted to be. We were able to get up our brollies up with the wind coming from our right.

Bob Eaton with some buddies
My match started slowly and plodded on with me going through a number of different baits, catching odd fish here and there. I had a lucky barbel of 4lb that I had seen roll on my pole line, a cast with the feeder had it on the hook within minutes. I ended up with 7 carp and the barbel and was looking midway in the section. Neil had bagged up once more on the feeder cast tightly to the far bank. Mr Ward had also enjoyed a good day at peg 17, he had cast rather too tight though on a few occasions. At one point during the match he had run the ‘charity mile’ round to the far bank to place his feeder tightly to the boards, sorry, to untangle his feeder from the boards. Everyone was watching for any foul play though, and he was swiftly back to play another carp to the net.
We weighed in from the far end and Chris Allen took the section with 37lb from the end peg 29, peg 30 wasn’t put in as Bob Eaten had proved it was easier to fish from peg 29 . Second place was narrowly claimed by Andy Kind with a great pole caught net of skimmers weighing 33lb, Kerry Dyson was just behind in third.
Neil had won our section with 96lb but Mr Ward was unlucky just behind with 87lb, Rich Bedder had a similar catch to me and came in third with 46lb, I managed to just pip ‘the spod’ into forth place.

Jarrad with a 'CD'
The first section was very tight, at the scales Steve Conway had just pipped Bob Eaton, with Gary Miller in third. Young Jarrad had been next to Steve and someone soon quipped ‘I bet it was like having an empty peg to your right, Steve’. Steve added that he did as Jarrad was busy up at peg 8 tormenting Roy for most of the duration of the match!!
I didn't get many reports from the other lakes although I did hear that Keith ‘Hovis’ Hudson had tried his hardest to talk Scott into packing up early as they were both fighting not to be last in pool 4. There was also a very worrying match for almost certain league winner Domonic Lanni. Rob ‘the conger’ Clayton was beating him for all but the dying minutes of the match, a last gasp carp ended it with Dom only just beating our most improved angler by just ounces, to say Dom was relieved was an understatement!! ‘Soon to be wed’ Paul Bates had a great result on pool 5, taking a fine win to add to the wedding fund.
Here are the results:
Pool 1
Section 1
Steve Conway - 60lb - peg 4
Bob Eaton - 55lb - peg 2
Gary Miller - 41lb - peg 1
Section 2

Pool 7

Gordon Parker - 28lb - peg 106
Albert Bray - 18lb - peg 105
It had been a difficult match in hard conditions but once again the results were very close and with this match the penultimate contest of our winter league there are still around 10 anglers fighting it out very closely for the top 6 positions.
And Finally by Dagga Ward:
Robber Marlow has taken a back seat this week as apart from getting very cold and having his brolly blown away on Sunday he has little to say. Firstly I think the reason the report has gone up late this week is because ‘ruthless’ Russell once again had a mediocre performance, whilst I was brilliant. I am also writing this is to dispel any rumours that I walked along the opposite bank to secretly feed the fish whilst pretending to unhook my feeder out of the far bank. Various team mates have accused me of this and of disturbing their far bank swims (JD & RM), naturally if no one saw me feeding the fish it did not happen.

Steve Conway - winner on section 1
Certain fellow anglers are out to get me, especially since I caught some fish on Sunday. The pie eaters between them had a disaster, I think they ate too many pies and had podge. Several people including Bob Eaton were heard to say that they had landed Chris Downs; I ask that this kind of talk be stopped immediately. I also heard from a very reliable angler that Ringo also uttered those words. Anyway I caught a carp that was even bigger than ACE, note I did not call it a Chris Downs. I am putting in an official complaint to the Match Committee concerning Robber Marlow; he crept up on me three times while I was playing a fish and emptied my flask. I consider that to be nasty.
Talking about being nasty young Jarrad has been showing his true colours and was nasty to almost everyone except his mate Honest Jim. He proudly wanted his picture taken holding a Chris Downs; I hope Chris makes him eat his words (I mean his pie). I will look forward to passing on the nasty trophy to him, it already has his name on it. Chris was awarded ‘man of the match’ which I thought was a very nice gesture, well done Chris.
I am pleased to say that we have a few more volunteers for the work party, remember if you do not help you will get some severe verbal. I have said enough.
