exit from archiveOur first winter league Sunday dawned very wet and windy. A few of us had decided a formula one breakfast down at Mallory Park’s trackside cafe was needed to get the day off to a good start. I was joined by Robber Roy, Honest Jim, Jarrad, Mr P Bates and Scott. Although Scott had made the 7am alarm for a big breakie he was quick to point out that he would not be fishing as he was not feeling too well. Paul promised to let us know the real reason later in the day, watch this space as it needs to be verified before print.

Scott Brown spies a marketing opportunity for his cornish sponsor
Jarrad spent most of breakfast loading some extra special stretchy line onto his reel and showing Jim some secret knots. We pondered the day's fishing and were all hopeful of a good draw, the probability was higher than usual as some of our noted drawbags were away on winter league duty else where, some of the squad were also down in Cornwall robbing the pools fodder. Another notable absenteeism was Andy Kind, usually first in the queue at the draw, his sick note said that he was suffering from a bad back! More on that later.
As we got up to the Glebe for the draw it was still raining very heavily, but still we had a healthy attendance of 40 willing anglers. There were a few new faces at the draw ready to be insulted at the first chance by Mr Ward. Roy announced that these new member were to be treated with a lot of kindness and respect as he didn't want any more lost member casualties! On hearing that AK was not attending the match Mr Ward suggested that Rob Gringo Clayton send him a sorry card for his recent battering, hopefully this is done soon and Andy can rejoin the party. This comment backfired slightly when Dippy Ward drew the peg that no one wanted, the one next to Rob!! What's more Rob was on the most prolific peg on the whole complex, peg 86, the little girl's peg!!
Onto the fishing. The weather on the day did improve in the afternoon, turning out quite pleasant in the autumn sunshine but the early pegs on pool one had the worst of the wind in the morning, the fishing was hardest in this section. New member Paul Bolsover, took the win narrowly from Robber Roy with Spodder Duncan, on the end peg, in third.
The middle section was won by Rich 'Scotty' Morgan with exactly 100lb, last year's league winner Domonic Lanni came in second and Rob Hollis was third place.
The final section on pool one was won by Ian 'Crackoff' Saiger with 114lb. He was also awarded the golden rod for bad conduct, he was duly reprimanded for having more than 100lb in one net! This weekly prize will be presented at next week's draw. Runner-up in the section was new member C Sutton, whose Christian name is still a mystery to me, Rob Bowser narrowly beat O.A.P Envis by ounces to take the third place.
Pool 4 was very close, Gordon Priddey talking the top weight of the day with 116lb just behind was Trev, in second, Bob Eaton struggled with a snaggy peg but still came in third spot.

Robber Marlow
New member Russell Hill took another ton up weight to win from the narrow end of pool 5. At the opposite end, peg 85, Paul Bates was close behind in second, Eric Burton was third.
Mr Ward has provided the report for pool 6, he said 'sitting between the Eel and the Python was more like having an empty peg each side'. It was not The Eel and the Python, more like Mick & Montmerensy. Apparently they were in the Bowery Boys. Way before my time. I will have to google them.
Mr Ward also mentioned there was nearly a major plane crash. A 747 homed in on Rob's float, the pilot thought is was a marker beacon, he had
so much of it showing. Now that is Nasty. Rob was very unfortunate not to win from the usual winning peg, but the common consensus was that the torrent of water flowing into the little girl's peg had pushed the fish past his bait. He did cast in every part of his swim trying to find them so this must be true.
It was also noted that Mr Ward was trying so hard not to get beaten, it was the first time he has not paid his usual visit to the far bank! The fish did indeed show at the other end with Jeff Reast taking 14 carp for 69lb narrowly beating Mark Davis at the adjacent peg, Gary Miller came in a close third.
I had drawn on pool 7 and had a slow start taking only one carp on the lead in the first hour. A change to the pole though produced a steady run of carp at 12m, I finished up with 26 carp in the net and had a very enjoyable day's fishing to win the lake. Kerry Dyson edged out Andy Towers for second with a good catch of carp on the 5m pole including a great 14½lb fish.

The Bowery Boys
And finally, Jarrad may be thinking of changing to a less stretchy line as he was last in his section and wasn't available for comment after the match. Mr Scott Brown was though, and was ruing the fact he had not fished, instead he claimed he had been attempting to fit some new curtains in his spare room, we are waiting for someone to tell us what he is trying to hide there!! After the match it was also mentioned that half of Team Parker was missing, it must have been the better half of the Team as Gordon was out of the paying positions for the first time in a long while. I'm sure he will be back.
The phones have not rung from the Pro team Psorter so we are presuming that the draw wasn't good. And as yet we haven't heard from the Cornish contingent, and they don't have bad draws! Mr Ward also wanted it to be mentioned for the record (and Andy Kind) that he did beat both Mick Python Moore and Rob the Eel Clayton.
Russelli.
