The week prior to our latest league match had been really cold. The over practicers had been out in force during the week and there were mixed reports, pool 1 had been hard but pool 7, down and out of the north easterly wind had been quite good. 40 anglers turned out to fish this week. There were concerns about the whereabouts of Mr Scott Brown. We cannot print any of the suggested reasons for his absence, even though they are from a very reliable source they need to be verified. Our most improved angler, Rob the Eel, was also missing at the draw, apparently he has had to have an injection in his elbow for the pain. Mr Ward added 'he must play an awful lot of tennis because he certainly hasn't strained it playing fish'. The nice anglers at the draw, especially honest Roy, wished Rob a speedy recovery. Roy added r Ward had already put a few of our members at risk of throwing in the towel and we can't afford to lose any more'.

On to the fishing:

Pool 1 proved to be very hard in the easterly winds. The first section was once again won from peg 8, with Gordon Parker taking a brilliant 68lbs of carp averaging around 5 lbs. All were taken on hair-rigged bread punch across to the far side of the lake. Dave Ringo was second on sheltered peg 1, he was unlucky to lose several large carp.

Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 8 - Gordon Parker - 68lbs
Peg 1 - Ringo - 44lbs
Peg 4 - Ian Saiger - 22lbs

The second section was probably worst affected by the cold wind. Winner Bob Eaton was the only one to break the 20lb barrier, taking small fish on a small feeder ¾ across the lake. Jeff Reast managed a few nice perch to get second place.

Section 2
Peg 20 - Bob Eaton - 27lbs
Peg 18 - Jeff Reast - 13lbs
Peg 14 - Rob Hollis -12lbs

I had drawn in the last section and had struggled to catch on my plan of attack. I ended up copying the tactics of Gary Miller at the next peg to eventually get a few carp into my net on a small groundbait feeder. My catch was only good enough for a section fourth though. Gordon Priddey had caught well later in the match, out of the wind, on peg 30. He easily won the section with Gary to my left taking second. I was well and truly chip-shopped, with Rich Bedder on my right in third place.

Section 3
Peg 30 - Gordon Priddey - 65lbs
Peg 22 - Gary Miller - 42lbs
Peg 28 - Rich Bedder - 28lbs

There was a giant slaying on pool 4, with Dom Lanni, last week's winner, getting battered both sides, which is a very rare event. What had made it worse was that Albert 'Bronk' Bray had threatened (some might say whinged) about packing up for most of the match and then, in the closing stages, he caught six big carp in as many casts to take the win. Mick Python Moore added to the misery, doubling Dom’s weigh at the other side. Young Jarrad had sat most of the match without a bite but also manage to get a couple of lumps in the net in the closing stages to weigh 19lbs for third.

Pool 4

Peg 74 - Albert Bray - 53lbs
Peg 71 - Mick Moore - 30lbs
Peg 67 - Jarrad Smith - 19lbs

Steve Conway took the win in pool 5 and the next three anglers were separated by just ounces. Kerry Dyson made it into second from his usual peg! With Pete Exton just edging out Chris Hall for third.

Pool 5
Peg 78 - Steve Conway - 57lbs
Peg 84 - Kerry Dyson - 37lbs
Peg 76 - Pete Exton - 36lbs

The little girl's peg was this week drawn by Rob Bowser, who took the top weight in the match with an excellent 72lb. Dagga Ward was back in the frame in second, he claimed that he could have easily have won the lake if Roy had not been pestering him for his flask for most of the match.

Pool 6
Peg 86 - Rob Bowser - 72lbs
Peg 90 - Dave Ward - 32lbs
Peg 94 - Dave Hunter - 15lbs

Clearly benefiting from the shelter pool 7 threw up the best section results. Dave West took the win with 52lbs, a string of 40lb weights backed up the results with OAP Brian Envis in second and Bob Conway and Rich Morgan drawing for third with exactly 44lbs each.

Pool 7
Peg 102 - Dave West - 52lbs
Peg 100 - Brian Envis - 48lbs
Peg 98 - Bob Conway - 44lbs
Peg 104 - Rich Morgan - 44lbs

And finally I must report that the track side cafe is now shut on Sunday mornings as the Mallory Park racing season has now finished. This was clearly a disappointment for some of the Nottingham anglers having to double back to the Fosse cafe for their early morning feed. It was clearly our hardest match so far this season - all but two anglers weighed in, most are getting into the spirit of the league and having some fun along with their fishing. Please don't take it too seriously!

Russelli.
