exit from archiveIce, snow and a biting north easterly wind meant it was only the hardcore at the match this week, with quite a few of the regulars wimping out in the tough conditions. Thirty-one anglers were still keen to do battle though, this however did cause a problem. Our trainee match organiser Rob Clayton would like to apologise to the world, and all of the anglers that caught less than robber Roy, for only counting in thirty anglers. More on this later. At the draw we were all keen to wish one of the anglers a happy 50th birthday but Pete Exton was not keen to come forward in admittance. We would like to thank Anita for bringing this to our attention. Another secret was also out of the bag and our best wishes were given to Jarrad for his forthcoming driving test. We have Scott Brown to thank for this information. Scott would also like to quash rumours that he is selling his kit to buy a bigger Christmas hamper!

On to the fishing…
After Rob's slight mistake at the draw the pool 1 section was swelled to seven anglers and a few were moaning. Pegs 9 to 30 had been left out to give everyone a chance of a comfortable day's fishing, but it was peg 10 that was put in as a reserve, it was really the only option. It also would have been very difficult to say to the fishery owner and the match organiser that one of them couldn't fish, especially with Mr Ward having the pools money in his pocket. It was in fact Roy who drew the extra peg and one he was not relishing. The section proved to be very difficult with most of the anglers only getting the one bite. John Palmer was happy to sit on the fancied peg 8 once again and managed a few more bites than most to win the section with 13lbs. Roy again upset the moaners by spending most of the day either sitting in or doing repairs on his Volvo, and then getting two bites in the dying moments of the match. Paul Bolsover was pushed into third.
Pool 1
Peg 8 - John Palmer - 13lbs
Peg 10 - Roy Marlow (TEAM ABU) - 7lbs
Peg 2 - Paul Bolsover - 6lbs
Pool 4 was also hard with big fish playing a part in the outcome. Ringo was tops in this pool with a catch of 29lbs. Second placed angler Dom Lanni really tested his new ABU Suveran 10’ rod with a cracking carp of 17lbs on the straight lead. Third place went to Jim Chessman who snared his only fish on the last cast of the day.
Pool 4
Peg 70 - Ringo - 29lbs
Peg 74 - Dom Lanni (TEAM ABU) - 25lbs
Peg 67 - Jim Chessman - 13lbs
Kerry Dyson not only knows all the carp by name in pool 5 but they also know his! He drew peg 84 for the third time in eight matches. Kerry fished well and took a clear win in the section with 65lbs. A close call in second and third with angling legend Bob Eaton just beating Gordon Parker by ounces. Bob’s weight was swelled by a fantastic common carp of 19lbs 12oz.
Pool 5
Peg 84 - Kerry Dyson - 65lbs
Peg 82 - Bob Eaton - 42lbs
Peg 81 - Gordon Parker (TEAM ABU) - 41lbs

Honest Dave Hunter
There were some shenanigans in pool 6. Before the weigh-in Steve Conway was admitting to catching just one small skimmer and a small buddy carp (a carp under 2lbs). This in itself is remarkable considering all the tackle he had set up at this peg. He then proceeded to have a £1 side bet with next peg angler 'honest' Dave Hunter thinking that Dave had a similar catch. But after placing the bet Steve pulled out his net holding a carp of 7lbs, definitely not a buddy. Steve was made up and looking really smug with his little trick. It back fired though when honest Dave pulled out his net with 5 carp in it. All caught under the Conway radar. Gary Saddler took the win from the little girl's peg with Dave in second and birthday boy Pete Exton in third place.
My drawing hand Bob Eaton had once again done me proud drawing me exactly where I wanted to be on a sheltered pool 7. It took a while to locate the fish but once found I had a brilliant day with lots of bites and lots of good banter with Rich Morgan at the next peg. Rich was quick to notice I had located the fish at 2/3 across the pool and we went fish for fish throughout the match. I was helped by a couple of beasties, one of around 14lbs subdued by my now favourite rod, the Suveran 10 footer. I finished the match with 74lbs with Rich just behind netting 71lbs. Pete Wooton was third at my other side.
Pool 6
Peg 86 - Gary Saddler (TEAM ABU) - 29lbs
Peg 92 - Dave Hunter - 22lbs
Peg 90 - Pete Exton - 16lbs
Pool 7
Peg 102 - Kev Russell (TEAM ABU) - 74lbs
Peg 104 - Richard Morgan - 71lbs
Peg 100 - Pete Wooton - 20lbs

And finally it seems the fishing was poor at the other big winter league in the area. We were quick to find out that not only had TEAM ABU star Chris Needham suffered a blank at Makin's, he had managed to borrow his entry fee from another team player Steve Psorter. We have now found out that this was a ploy so that he could take home a Chinese meal and pretend to his wife that he had won some money! We are all secretly hoping that Chris forgets how to catch carp before his return to the Glebe in the new year.
