exit from archiveA much better day, weather-wise, this Sunday but cold temperatures during the week had kept the water temperature down below 4C. Thirty anglers had turned up to fish so there were three sections of six on pool 1 and 6 anglers on each of pools 4 and 5. This week Bob Eaton had once again drawn me on peg 6, in the fishy first section. This part of pool 1, up to the bend at peg 8, has been consistently producing good catches all through the winter.
I felt from the off though that the first few pegs would produce the goods. A south westerly wind was blowing up to peg 1 and Chris Allen had drawn it. Gary Miller was on peg 2 for the second week in a row and Rob Hollis, on peg 4, may have even been in this section more times than me! Straight away the first two pegs were catching and it was evident that the rest of the section was after the third place. It was a tough match with a lot of blank spells. With most of the match gone it wasn't looking good. Rob was looking like third, with 7 carp, and 'honest' Jim Chessman, on peg 8, had five in the net. I had 3 carp and Ringo, on peg 5, had 2 carp.
As the saying goes though 'anything can happen in the last half hour'. Firstly I had a visit from young Jarrad, who had just got out of bed! He said Jim had phoned him to come and witness him beating me. Jarrad did try to put me off, threatening to put a film of my casting on youtube if I had a bad 'un. I have witnessed Jarrad’s casting under pressure and it isn't nice. I tried very hard not to mess it up and two of my last three casts caught me carp. Jarrad was cheering me on all the way. At the weigh-in Gary had won the battle in the first two pegs, putting 15 carp for 71lbs on the scales. Just behind was Chris on 61lbs. He did confess that he had not fished well and even his mate Chris Downs could have caught from the peg. My last two fish had done the job and I just edged out Rob to finish in third spot, thanks to Jarrad. I think he helped Jim get his kit back to the van out of guilt.
Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 2 - Gary Miller - 71lbs
Peg 1 - Chris Allen (team abu) - 61lbs
Peg 6 - Kev Russell (team abu) - 37lbs
The second section was hard with Ian Saiger catching 5 carp for the win.
Section 2
Peg 19 - Ian Saiger - 34lbs
Peg 16 - Gordon Parker (team abu) - 16lbs
Peg 17 - Chris Hall - 11lbs
Section three saw a return to form of the big man Chris Downs. Forgetting the failure of the week before he triumphed on the same peg 22. Chris had a great net of quality skimmers and also a couple of perch, the biggest going 3lbs 12ozs. These added up to 25lbs. To add to that he had 2 carp, one of 10lbs and one of 15lbs to blitz the section and also get credited Man of the Match. Chris Allen said it must have been solid! Brian Hill continued his run of form in second place.
Section 3
Peg 22 - Chris Downs (team abu) - 50lbs
Peg 20 - Brian Hill - 14lbs
Peg 28 - Trev Slater - 9lbs
Pool 4 was a very tight match looking at the result, with it going to Gary Saddler. Just behind there were only ounces between Stu Johnson and Mr Ward. Mr Ward would also like it to be known that Paul Bolsover was inconsolable at the next peg, coming in last place with a fifth of Mr Ward's brilliant catch.
Pool 4
Peg 70 - Gary Saddler (team abu) - 21lbs
Peg 67 - Stu Johnson - 17lbs 14ozs
Peg 74 - David Ward - 17lbs 9ozs
Pool 5 saw the return of globe trotting Rob Bowser, straight into the fancied peg on pool 5, as if he hadn't been away. Steve Conway held off Kerry Dyson at the other end of the lake. Kerry is thinking of donating a plaque to peg 84, as he feels like it is a home from home.
Pool 5
Peg 77 - Rob Bowser (team abu) - 49lbs
Peg 83 - Steve Conway (team abu) - 24lbs
Peg 84 - Kerry Dyson - 23lbs
And finally we're not to mention Pizza delivery and Rob Clayton in the same sentence until facts are verified by several honest law abiding citizens, or Scott Brown, or Andy Kind. Mr Ward had also given out a challenge this week, asking what would cause the displacement of a foot of water over an area of an acre. Several of the quick witted amongst the match group (not many according to Mr Ward) came up with the answer in cubic feet and also in kilos. The answer turned out to be Scott Brown! Mr Ward claimed that is how far the concrete lake’s water level went down when Scott climbed out of the lake on a recent netting operation. Roy thought this was very nasty and said that it would be noted, and Scott was so upset by Mr Ward's comments that he nearly dropped one of his pies. Roy added that Scott had proven to be very helpful during the netting, if a little ruthless. More on the netting operations at a later date.
