exit from archiveConditions were against us again this week, there was an ice cold easterly wind blowing and a forecast of snow showers later in the day. Thirty two brave anglers had turned out to fish and were pegged on pools 1, 4 & 5. This week I had been drawn on peg 21, at the end of the middle section. I was hopeful of a few fish as it has been a reasonable area. After an hour's fishing I had not had an indication on the straight lead, across tight to the boards. I decided to have a quick walk up the section to see what was happening. There had only been odd fish caught. As I got to the end of the section I found Chris Needham, on peg 12, hastily setting up a waggler rod. I stood and watched as his first few casts across pool 1 produced carp straight away. Chris explained that on the lead rod his tip was constantly moving but he wasn't getting proper bites. He had quickly sussed out that the fish were giving him line indications but weren't on the line he was casting to. Chris was casting his waggler ¾ of the way across the pool and his float was set at around half depth, he was baiting with three red maggots.
I was feeling envious and as I walked back to my peg most of the section had caught a carp. The afternoon forecast had been correct and from midday we sat through constant snow showers. I got my head down and by the end of the match I had managed to catch five carp on the feeder tight across. As usual we weighed-in from the far end, this section was going to be between Mick Python Moore and Honest Jim Chessman, as both had claimed to have 5 carp. Mick’s fish went on the scales first and weighed 17lbs, Jim was estimating his 5 carp to weigh 16½lbs. Five of them probably would have done, but the six fish in his net actually weighed 20lbs. Jim blamed the cold weather for his mistaken tally! John Palmer put together the best catch of silver fish on the day from peg 29 to finish third on 11lbs. Pro Angler Steve Porter was unlucky, just missing out with 10lbs, he claimed to have been disadvantaged by Rob ‘Domino’ Clayton at the next peg. Rob had apparently cast out 243 times in the space of four hours, according to Mr Psorter. Rob was unavailable for comment as he had left early to deliver pizza!
I was the first angler to weigh in the middle section and my 5 carp weighed 23lbs and were good enough for second in the section. Stu Johnson had managed 4 carp for third but the winner with a magnificent catch of 24 carp and a weight of 110lbs was Chris Needham, all on the shallow waggler! Rob Bowser on peg 11 had fished similar tactics to Chris and managed to put 8 carp in the net to win the first section. Chris Downs had fought back on the fancied peg 2 after a slow start to finish second and Gordon Parker beat Albert Bray into third spot with the help of a surprise 2½lb chub.
Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 11 - Rob Bowser - 33lbs
Peg 2 - Chris Downs - 28lbs
Peg 8 - Gordon Parker - 21lbs
Section 2
Peg 12 - Chris Needham - 110lbs
Peg 21 - Kev Russell - 23lbs
Peg 18 - Stu Johnson - 14lbs
Section 3
Peg 26 - Jim Chessman - 20lbs
Peg 27 - Mick Moore - 17lbs
Peg 29 - John Palmer - 11lbs
Only three anglers weighed in on a difficult pool 4. Gary Miller continued his current form with a win from peg 70. Dave Hunter was second and Chris Allen third. Chris Allen suggested that it should be mentioned that Steve Conway played several foul hooked fish unsuccessfully and didn't catch anything!
Pool 4
Peg 70 - Gary Miller - 36lbs
Peg 67 - Dave Hunter - 27lbs
Peg 68 - Chris Allen - 24lbs
Pool 5 also proved to be hard going, but it was a comeback to form for Domonic Lanni taking a win with silver fish from unfancied peg 80 in the middle of the lake. Tony Beresford came in second and Bill Pryce in third. The end pegs that have been so good of late failed to produce with Ian Saiger failing to weigh on end peg 85 and saving Mr Ward from last place on the other fancied peg. Mr Ward blamed Chris Allen for his meagre catch as Chris had told him to cast to the pipe on the other side, there were two pipes though and apparently Mr Ward had cast to the wrong one!
Pool 5
Peg 80 - Dom Lanni - 33lbs
Peg 82 - Tony Beresford - 19lbs
Peg 78 - Bill Pryce - 9lbs
And finally Mr Ward was a bit put out this week - Roy had not fished due to a hefty work load and the 'perpetual' flask of tea that Mr Ward carefully prepares, to a secret recipe known only to himself, was left untouched. We also had a visit from Young Jarrad in the afternoon, once again he told me he had been out late clubbing on Saturday evening. Apparently he was at the Bingo and he can only come fishing if he wins. He hasn't been fishing for ages! Scott Brown told me that so I feel confident that it is true.
