Sunday 22nd February 2009

With three of the last six winter league matches cancelled due to ice it was a pleasant change to have some milder weather this Sunday. An overnight temperature of around 8C looked promising for a few bites. 37 anglers had turned out to fish the first of our final group of six matches and lakes 1, 4, 5, 6 & 7 were pegged in. The fishing proved to be hard on pool 1 with reports of only a few fish being caught. The first section was won by Rich Morgan with 32lbs but only 15lbs was needed for the third place. The second section was even harder with Carl Redman, on peg 27, winning the section. Bob Conway was second with 16lbs but reportedly put back a barbel nearing double figures. He will now be known as Bob 'the barbel'.

Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 2 - Rich Morgan - 32lbs
Peg 4 - Mark Davis - 17lbs
Peg 15 - Mick Moore - 15lbs

Section 2
Peg 27 - Carl Redman - 20lbs
Peg 17 - Bob Conway - 16lbs
Peg 23 - Rob Hollis - 8lbs

Pool 4 was also hard for the first few hours, but almost everyone had a few bonus fish in the afternoon, when my peg really came to life. I had a great day taking 16 relatively small carp on the long pole with corn and maggot hook bait. This was good enough to win the lake. Stu O'Donnell had kept the pressure on for most of the match, catching 8 larger carp for second place and 'angling legend' Bob Eaton had a late run of carp to add to a great silver fish catch of 16lbs to finish third. Mr Ward was given man of the match for 20lbs of little fish on the pole.

Pool 4
Peg 70 - Kev Russell (team abu) - 65lbs
Peg 68 - Stu Odonnell - 57lbs
Peg 67 - Bob Eaton - 41lbs

Pool 5 was a good match with Tony Woodings taking advantage of his usual peg 77 taking 68lbs of carp, including one of 15lbs, for the match's top weight. Behind Tony it was between top league contenders Gary Miller and Gordon Parker. Gary finished in front with a good catch of quality skimmers and a couple of big perch to go with several carp.

Pool 5
Peg 77 - Tony Woodings - 68lbs
Peg 82 - Gary Miller - 42lbs
Peg 79 - Gordon Parker (team abu) - 32lbs

Down on pool 6 it was a match of two halves with ‘Honest’ Jim Chessman taking the early lead. Jim's peg then dried up and the fish seemed to come along to the first few pegs. Rob Bowser made the most of this with a late run of carp on the groundbait feeder for 65lbs. Paul Bolsover was runner up and Chris Hall third on the little girl's peg.

Pool 6
Peg 90 - Rob Bowser (team abu) - 65lbs
Peg 88 - Paul Bolsover - 55lbs
Peg 86 - Chris Hall - 37lbs

Pool 7 saw the fish at the other end of the lake with Jeff Reast drawn at the far end on 108 taking 61lbs, second was Chris Allen and third Tony Beresford.

Pool 7
Peg 108 - Jeff Reast - 61lbs
Peg 104 - Chris Allen (team abu) - 44lbs
Peg 106 - Tony Beresford - 36lbs

And finally it is now official, according to a certain 'angling legend', that Chris Needham has 'gone'. After running to peg 11, to repeat his ton-up performance, Chris spent most of the match defensively fishing to stave off another battering from in-form Brian Hill. Brian apparently eased up on him mid-match as he realised it would be bad enough for Chris later - he wouldn't be taking home a Chinese dinner and would probably be in the dog house when he got home. It has also come to light that there was a serious flooding event at the local Centre Parcs site. Police apparently want to interview a large gentleman wearing a Mallory Park Fisheries t-shirt, last seen on a speeding pedalo! The committee are looking to see if we have a member fitting the description given by several swamped anglers.
