Sunday 8th March 2009

35 anglers had turned out to fish this week, we were missing another regular though, Ringo had taken a leaf out of Scott Brown's book and had been playing suicide football, more broken bones were the result. On the subject of football Mr Ward was quick to point out that the goalkeeper for Cheltenham Town FC, who recently lost 4 - 0 to Leicester City, was also named Scott Brown. He added that if it was our Scott Brown he could have laid down on the line, preventing the goals!

With the winter league drawing to an end, a good peg was going to be essential for the anglers at the top of the points table and after my disaster last week I needed a miracle! It wasn't to be though. I watched my closest competition in the league draw last week's winning end pegs. My drawing hand, Bob Eaton, couldn't do his usual magic, drawing me on peg 11, I definitely needed a miracle! Tony Woodings had drawn the section end peg 13 and wasn't confident at the start after struggling in the area the week before. First cast into the match and both myself and Tony were rewarded with a carp, I thougth it might be a good sign. It was for Tony as he added 10 more during the match to win the section. All Tony's fish came to corn cast tight across and at ¾ distance. My match didn't go so well and only 5 small carp gave me a poor result once again. Gordon Parker caught steadily throughout the match on the feeder and had a good catch of ‘buddy’ carp to finish in second place. Third place, and man of the match, went to Mr Ward. Not only had he managed to stay on the fishing side of the lake for a full match, he also put together a great catch of the smallest carp in pool 1, he used a blockend maggot feeder at peg 6.

Along with his newly regained form Mr Ward’s dishonesty has also returned. He had estimated his weight at 12lbs and actually weighed 30lbs. Robber Roy was quick to point out that this is why Mr Ward usually buys the ice creams on the summer Honesty matches.

The second section on pool 1 fished much better. Chris Hall had a great catch of the lake's bigger skimmers in amongst his 77lb weight. Chris Needham did a really good job on peg 17 fishing the long pole in really strong side winds. Chris had both carp and skimmers on pellet and maggot.

Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 13 - Tony Woodings - 50lbs
Peg 1 - Gordon Parker (team ABU) - 39lbs
Peg 6 - David Ward - 30lbs

Section 2
Peg 23 - Chris Hall - 77lbs
Peg 17 - Chris Needham (team ABU) - 55lbs
Peg 20 - John Palmer - 43lbs

Pools 4 & 5 were both affected by the strong winds and on both lakes the narrow end pegs were the winners. Jim Chessman took the win on pool 4, with a little help from Jarrad, I am told. Richard Morgan taking the win on pool 5 fishing a long pole up the left hand margin.

Pool 4
Peg 67 - Jim Chessman - 55lbs
Peg 72 - Paul Bolsover - 52lbs
Peg 69 - Steve Conway (team ABU) - 44lbs

Pool 5
Peg 76 - Rich Morgan - 71lbs
Peg 78 - Dom Lanni (team ABU) - 57lbs
Peg 83 - Rob Hollis - 50lbs

On pool 6 Rob Bowser made no mistakes taking 30 carp on both feeder and long margin pole on the little girl's peg. The others were left trailing but had a good close match.

Pool 6
Peg 86 - Rob Bowser - 127lbs
Peg 88 - Andy Kind - 67lbs
Peg 90 - Gordon Priddey - 53lbs

Pool 7 was a strange one, everyone expected Gary Miller to romp to a win on a peg that has thrown up the winning weights for a few weeks now. He did have a great catch of 90lbs but it was the OAP, and former likely lad, Brian Envis who set the lake on fire. Brian apparently fished a large feeder with everything he could find crammed into it, a terrific winning catch of 111lbs was the result. Angling Legend Bob Eaton was only a couple of pounds behind Gary in third place.

Pool 7
Peg 102 - Brian Envis - 111lbs
Peg 108 - Gary Miller - 90lbs
Peg 100 - Bob Eaton - 87lbs

And finally Mr Ward has now declared that I have ‘gone’ big time and has offered counselling sessions. He is also looking forward to battering Robber Roy next week now he has regained his form. Young Jarrad was also after some counselling - Dagga has refused though, telling him that if he had not spent so long helping Honest Jim to win he wouldn't have come last! Very hurtful.
