Sunday 15th March 2009

A very pleasant sunny Sunday morning for the 45 anglers this week, including the return of Mr Scott Brown. As you can imagine, if you read this report regularly, there was much amusement and leg pulling (excuse the pun) at the draw. Mr Brown is a very kind and helpful person and puts a lot of effort into the club and the committee regards any uncalled for abuse towards him as very nasty. More on this later. The league is really close with three matches remaining and the top three placed anglers, including myself, were all pegged on pool 4.

Firstly though I will report on the antics on pool 1. The first section was sure to be the best and closest section. It was Honest Jim Chessman who led all the way, following a win from peg 6 the previous day he took a stunning catch of 120lbs to easily win the section from peg 8. Keith Hovis Hudson tried hard to keep up but was way behind in second. This was good because Mr Ward could pay him back his carrier bag full of coppers that he pays his pools with each week! Chris Allen drew bang on, drawing peg 1 once again and was rewarded with third place. The second section was also won with a ton of fish - Rich Scotty Morgan once again fished the feeder and pellet to take 107lbs from peg 17. Dave Hunter was left trailing but also had a good weight at the next peg for second. And Chris Needham was safe for a Chinese with his third place winnings. This section was disrupted towards the end of the match but I will report on this later. The final section was won by Dom Lanni with a great catch of 84lbs, Stu O'Donnell came in second and Jarrad was back on form in third place. Robber was back but didn't have a good match, he put this down to having to help Mr Ward with his tackling up!

Pool 1
Section 1
Peg 8 - Jim Chessman - 120lbs
Peg 7 - Keith Hudson - 74lbs
Peg 1 - Chris Allen - 66lbs

Section 2
Peg 17 - Rich Morgan - 107lbs
Peg 18 - Dave Hunter - 85lbs
Peg 11 - Chris Needham - 43lbs

Section 3
Peg 21 - Dom Lanni - 84lbs
Peg 23 - Stu O'Donnell - 69lbs
Peg 24 - Jarrad Smith - 37lbs

It was an important match down on pool 4 with the league's top three, Gary Miller, Gordon Parker and myself all drawing in the same section. As I saw it I had a very hard task. I wasn't in the fancied middle pegs, and I didn't have an end peg if the fish had moved around the margin with the warmer weather. Gary on the other hand had the best draw on paper, peg 67, last week's winning peg. I had drawn next to him, whilst Gordon had probably drawn the worst peg on paper, number 74. Fishery owner Robber Roy commented at the start that it is around this time of year that this end of the pool starts to pick up a little form. The match turned out to be a real close affair with many methods adopted to catch the larger carp in this pool. It was a fine net of silver fish caught by Gordon though, on the unfancied peg, together with some late carp up along the far end margin into peg 75 that sealed the win. I just scraped second with most of my nine carp caught 18” deep on the waggler in 8 feet of water! The water must be warming up! Kerry Dyson added four big carp into double figures to his catch of skimmers to take the third spot in front of Gary in fourth place. The top positions will be even tighter now going into the final two matches. It must be noted that Mick Moore suffered greatly in this section and Roy has put this down to a severe case of over practice!

Pool 4
Peg 74 - Gordon Parker - 69lbs
Peg 68 - Kev Russell - 53lbs
Peg 71 - Kerry Dyson - 51lbs

Pool 5 saw John Palmer, peg 79, take a very narrow win from Gordon Priddey on the narrow end peg. Tony Woodings was in third place, with Scott Brown having a good come back match just behind.

Pool 5
Peg 79 - John Palmer - 86lbs
Peg 76 - Gordon Priddey - 84lbs
Peg 81 - Tony Woodings - 51lbs

Pool 6 had been ravaged during the days prior to the match with Mick Moore having extensive practice sessions on peg 88, he reportedly didn't sit on peg 86 because it was too easy! This may have had an affect on the pool as the weight came much farther up the lake in the unfancied narrow pegs. The winner and second place anglers both moaned about their peg draws, which is not out of character I will add, but both being ace professional sponsored anglers sat down and did the business, having a real close contest. Steve Conway took top spot from Chris Downs in second. Although the fish had a hard time in the week at the other end, Bill Pryce managed to put enough in the net on the little girl's peg to finish third.

Pool 6
Peg 94 - Steve Conway - 77lbs
Peg 92 - Chris Downs - 71lbs
Peg 86 - Bill Pryce - 63lbs

Pool 7 was a match of end pegs with angling legend Bob Eaton having another ton on peg 108 to take the win. At the other end it was a return of Leicester’s Professional Angler Steve Porter who put 88lbs in the net for second. Third place went to tackle dealer Pete Wooton on peg 105.

Pool 7
Peg 108 - Bob Eaton - 106lbs
Peg 100 - Steve Porter - 88lbs
Peg 105 - Pete Wooton - 59lbs

And Finally Mr Ward has made a special request to highlight the nastiest deed ever committed at the fishery. As members know if anyone has a grievance or complaint that can be reliably substantiated with honest witnesses then we can print it.

This nastiest of deeds happened on Sunday 15th January. Prior to this nasty deed it was noted that Mr Scott Brown had received some extremely hurtful comments from Mr Ward, Scott was powerless to complain due to his broken ankle.

The story goes like this - Robber Marlow had already depleted Mr Ward's perpetual coffee and had received some abuse. Several visits during the match for more coffee received even more abuse. Then Mr Ward did his usual trick and cast his feeder into the far bank on peg 13. This was a desperate tactic as, with an hour to go Chris Needham, or as Mr Ward calls him, The Jew Boy, was starting to put a few fish together at the next peg. A quantity of corn was hidden about Mr Ward's person and he proceeded to walk around to far side of the lake to release his tackle and cunningly feed his peg with this corn, he is the renowned expert at this tactic and does it most weeks. Once out of sight Robber tried to free Mr Ward's tackle from his peg but failed, the line broke, as you would expect with a 4lb reel line and a 10lb hook length stuck in the far bank. Robber ran back to his peg while Mr Ward continued his long walk around the lake. Needless to say when he finally got to the far side he was not amused. The committee would like to apologise for the loud abuse that was aimed at Robber at the other end of the lake. The Jew Boy received stress counselling because he was so frightened by Mr Ward's words on his return. To make matters worse Robber finished off Mr Ward’s coffee. In Robber's defence he said 'It was pay back time for all of the hurtful things Mr Ward had said to all of our nice members especially Scott Brown'. It looks as if Robber will receive the Nasty Trophy this season. His final words were 'they made me do it'.

Russelli.
